About this Item: Hoffman and White, Albany, 1834. First Edition. 12mo original printed boards with cloth spine, 120 pp. Very minor wear to binding, inscription on front end paper, minor aging and toning. Nice copy in sturdy binding. The Shakers (The United Society of Believers) was probably founded around 1772 by Ann Lee, who believed she was the Second Coming of Christ. Originally the group was known as the âÂÂShaking QuakersâÂÂ, because of the intense shaking they did during services. Clearly out of the Christian mainstream, they held extreme views on celibacy and maintained considerable emphasis on simplicity in daily living. In the late 18th century, the religion made progress and succeed at getting converts in New England. The present work was the result of the Kentucky Revival for the Shaker cult, which occurred during the 1797-1805 period. The author, John Dunlavy (1769-1826), was a Presbyterian Minister who joined the Shakers around the time of the Kentucky Revival. Part of this work (105-119) contains extracts from a letter to Barton W. Stone, a prominent religious leader at that time. Seller Inventory # 100194
