Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 351 Pages Indexed. Tight square book. Both covers show very minor wear. Interior text pages are near flawless.Penciled in price inside front cover. Illustrated with 28 pages of black and white photographs on glossy paper. The Fante letters are attuned to the person he is addressing and absorbed in his subject matter. In the earlier years it was usually himself. Preserved for decades by their various recipients-by his loving mother, who must have treasured her young son's confidences, the outpouring of his hopes and dreams; by a young cousin who early on saw in him a genius; by his devoted wife, who endorsed his belief that his real calling was literature, not screenwriting; by one of his supportive publishers; and by his lawyer-journalist-writer friend. There are character sketches, anecdotes, and lyrical outpourings such as his paean to writing paper, written in 1940, but the best examples of this kind are the frequent and lengthy reports sent home to his wife Joyce from his three trips to Europe. Sprinkled, as an additional source of interest, with tidbits of gossip about film personalities, these letters have the qualities of fine reporting and preserve for us both vignettes of Europe in the late fifties and the sensibility of a perceptive Italian-American finally doing what he'd dreamed of almost thirty years earlier, visiting the ancestral homeland. Then there is the biographical interest, with the letters-helped out by occasional interspersed editorial commentary, including invaluable contributions by Joyce Fante-serving to provide the rough outlines of the author's life and career and the flavor of the milieux he moved in, from Depression era Los Angeles to more exotic locales like Rome, Berlin, and Naples. Contents: Introduction, A Note on the Editing, The Letters 1932 - 1981, and Epilogue. Plus Four Appendices - Fante's Diary January 1940, The First Time I Saw Paris by John Fante, John Fante by Ross B. Wills, and Bibliography.
