About this Item: The Atlantic Monthly Press (c.1995), New York, 1995. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) John Gall (illustrator). First Edition. [minor shelfwear and light soiling to bottom edge of boards, otherwise tight and clean; jacket shows only light surface wear, mild scuffing]. Horse stories by a wide range of writers -- Rudyard Kipling, Patricia Highsmith, Liam O'Flaherty, Thorne Smith, Clarice Lispector, Saki, John Steinbeck, William Saroyan, Catherine Petroski, Wallace Stegner, Manuel Buaken, Joyce Cary, John O'Hara, Beryl Markham, Gretel Ehrlich, James Salter, Kay Boyle, Elizabeth Spencer, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Pam Houston, Tess Slesinger, Rick Bass -- selected to present, in the editor's words, "a modern, complex look at the ageless relationship between horses and people." The jacket blurb also notes that the book "disproves the notion that horse stories are only for children" (which I think I figured out as soon as I saw Patricia Highsmith's name among the contributors). 0-87113-595-7. About this Item: Grove Press (c.1996), New York, 1996. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) John Gall (illustrator). First Edition. [nice tight copy, appears brand-new and unread; jacket slightly rubbed/scuffed]. The author "challenges the position that porn perpetuates misogyny and hate crimes, arguing that porn isn't just about gender and that fantasy doesn't necessarly constitute intent [and that] criminalizing fantasy -- even perverse and unacceptable fantasy -- has dire social consequences." (So did this book "completely change the terms of the pornography debate," I wonder, as promised by the jacket blurb? Read it and get back to me on that.) 0-8021-1584-5. Seller Inventory # 18132

About this Item: Vintage Books, New York, 2000. Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Gall, John - Cover (illustrator). First Printing. 209 Pages. Tight book with no marks or stamps. Hailed for its searing emotional insights, and for the astonishing originality with which it weaves together personal history, cultural essay, and readings of classical texts by Sophocles, Ovid, Euripides, and Sappho, The Elusive Embrace is a profound exploration of the mysteries of identity, a meditation in which the author uses his own divided life to investigate the rich conflictedness of things, the double lives all of us lead. Daniel Mendelsohn recalls the deceptively quiet suburb where he grew up, torn between his mathematician father's pursuit of scientific truth and the exquisite lies spun by his Orthodox Jewish grandfather; the streets of Manhattan's newest gay ghetto, where desire for love competes with love of desire, and the quiet moonlit house where a close friend's small son teaches him the meaning of fatherhood. And, finally, in a neglected Jewish cemetery, the author uncovers a family secret that reveals the universal need for storytelling, for inventing myths of the self. The book that Hilton Als calls equal to Whitman's Song of Mysel. The Elusive Embrace marks a dazzling literary debut. Size: 5 1/4" x 8". Seller Inventory # 12587

About this Item: A Borzoi Book/Published by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., Publishers, New York, 2002. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket Missing. John Gall (Jacket Design) (illustrator). 1st Edition. 483 pp. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Richard Russo - from his first novel, Mohawk, to his most recent, Straight Man - has demonstrated a peerless affinity for the human tragicomedy, and with this stunning new novel he extends even further his claims on the small-town, blue-collar heart of the country. Dexter County, Maine, and specifically the town of Empire Falls, has seen better days, and for decades, in fact, only a succession from bad to worse. One by one, its logging and textile enterprises have gone belly-up, and the once vast holdings of the Whiting clan (presided over by the last scion's widow) now mostly amount to decrepit real estate. The working classes, meanwhile, continue to eke out whatever meager promise isn't already boarded up. Miles Roby gazes over this ruined kingdom from the Empire Grill, an opportunity of his youth that has become the albatross of his daily and future life. Called back from college and set to work by family obligations - his mother ailing, his father a loose cannon - Miles never left home again. Even so, his own obligations are manifold: a pending divorce; a troubled younger brother; and, not least, a peculiar partnership in the failing grill with none other than Mrs. Whiting. All of these, though, are offset by his daughter, Tick, whom he guides gently and proudly through the tribulations of adolescence. A decent man encircled by history and dreams, by echoing churches and abandoned mills, by the comforts and feuds provided by lifelong friends and neighbors, Miles is also a patient, knowing guide to the rich, hardscrabble nature of Empire Falls: fathers and sons and daughters, living and dead, rich and poor alike. Shot through with the mysteries of generations and the shattering visitations of the nation at large, it is a social novel of panoramic ambition, yet at the same time achingly personal. In the end, Empire Falls reveals our worst and best instincts, both our most appalling nightmares and our simplest hopes, with all the vision, grace and humanity of truly epic storytelling. Richard Russo lives in coastal Maine with his wife and their two daughters. Clean, undamaged copy. Minor wear on cover boards. Dj missing. Seller Inventory # 6iDc0028

About this Item: Random House (c.1998), New York, 1998. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) John Gall (illustrator). First Edition. [nice clean copy, possibly read once (but with care), light bumping to a couple of corners; jacket shows minor surface wear (also note that the jacket, by design, is about 1-1/2" shorter than the book itself)]. "The suspenseful and hilarious story of a gifted politician with dangerous friends and a zipper problem," who also "has good reason to believe he is the illegitimate son of JFK. His goal is the same as that of any Kennedy: to reclaim the presidency.and enjoy as many women as possible along the way." This highly-regarded author is an ex-CIA agent who has achieved a significant following in two fictional genres -- spy fiction (the "Paul Christopher" series) and novels of political intrigue. His work has been praised by the likes of Eric Ambler and Richard Condon, and compared (favorably) by critics to that of Ian Fleming, John Le Carré and even William Faulkner. As one critic (Morton Marcus) has remarked, his spy novels "create a fictive world as convincing and inclusive as Faulkner's microcosmic Yoknapatawpha County. His concerns are similar to Faulkner's, and his characterization and style alone place him beyond the claustrophobic categorizing of genre literature. [He is also] beyond Le Carré in vision and purpose and is producing some of the best, most readable and provocative literature today." Somewhat mysteriously, his works never seem to have sold particularly well -- and hence, have tended to go out of print rather quickly. 0-679-44761-X. Seller Inventory # 12339

[nice tight copy with only a miniscule amount of shelfwear at base of spine, appears unread; jacket shows just a trace of handling wear, very slight fading to spine, still bright and attractive]. (B&W photographs) "In 1989, Romania exploded in revolution. Suddenly the borders were open and those who had fled Nicholae Ceausescu's tyranny could now revisit their roots. Among them was [the author], once Romania's most famous opposition writer, now a best-selling American author and successful Hollywood filmmaker. This book is the story of his journey. It is also a fascinating account of growing up under 'ordinary Communism.'" 0-8021-1613-2. Seller Inventory # 23396

About this Item: Atlantic Monthly Press (c.1997), New York, 1997. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) John Gall (illustrator). First Edition. [minor shelfwear to cloth at base of spine, otherwise a nice clean book; jacket just a bit rubbed, John Behrendt endorsement/blurb sticker NOT present (see notes)]. National Book Award-winning Civil War novel, basis for the 2003 movie of the same name, for which Renée Zellweger hauled in a Supporting Actress Oscar. This is the true first edition (stated)/first printing (full number line), with all called-for points (including "man-woman" misprint on page 25, line 16). NOTE that the circular label bearing the laudatory quote from John Berendt is not present on the front jacket panel, although we are not prepared to claim it was never there; in fact, if you look closely it's possible to detect an extremely faint shadow outline in the area where the sticker is typically found (this is as the book was received by us). 0-87113-679-1.
