Hardcover: H 25.75cm x L 18.25cm. Dark gray dust jacket; greater than half of lower spine paper lacking; some other negligible chips and short tears at edges; light horizontal crease at center across both panels and flaps; publisher's printed price still present at front flap's bottom right corner; dj presented in a mylar protector. Blue cloth with vibrant silver stamping to front board and spine; slight scuffing at spine ends and tips of boards' bottom corners. Blue top edge; light toning to fore-edge and bottom edge. Past owner's personal bookplate on front free endpaper; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Else a very good+ copy in a good dust jacket. Introduction by Ernest Hemingway on pages 7-9. John Groth, a member of Hemingway's "irregulars" and the illustrator of 1946 World Publishing reprint edition of Hemingway's "Men Without Women," reviews his WWII experiences in Europe as correspondent and artist. Author's b/w sketch illustrations throughout. Pages have yellowed a bit but text is fully legible and pages are still supple. Fascinating book, written in the midst of the action, rather like Ernie Pyle's stuff, listing the names and home town of the soldiers he talked with. A handsome book out of the dust jacket, dark blue with silver illustration of two soldiers on the front cover, silver spine titles. Boards have mild shelfwear. The dj has a couple of small open tears and related creasing in the spine head and very small tears / chips in corners.
