This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. Excerpt from On the Representation of the University of Oxford: A Letter to Sir Brook W. Bridges, Bart. M. P., C. C As a Member of Convocation, I have received several papers signed with your name, on which I take the liberty of offering a few remarks; and I trust that in so doing I shall not forget old times, nor old and kindly relations, nor the true regard and esteem with which I must always look upon you. For as to these papers, I do not and cannot consider them as being in any proper sense yours. I find in them two conclusions, to which I am requested to come, with their several premises. I. Mr. Gladstone is not a fit candidate to represent the University of Oxford. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About this Item: No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Autograph letter signed, 1p. 8vo (with integral blank leaf, addressed "Mr Jones - Blewbury near Wallingford Berks", postmarked FAIRFORD), Fairford, 13 April 1796. "Mrs K. having lately been confined in the Straw, I have been less attentive, than I ought to have been, to my Business at a Distance" - what is the news of "my Tithes at Thrup"? Might "you & Mr Humfrey [John Humfrey, churchwarden] . . . make as good a Bargain as you can"? "If however you find much Difficulty in it, & think my Presence necessary, you will be so kind as to give me a Line, & I will endeavour if possible to find Time for the Journey." He signs off "your affectionate Friend". John Keble (1745-1834), father of the author of The Christian Year (then aged four), was Vicar of Coln St Aldwyn, near Fairford, in Gloucestershire, for 52 years. He also had the living of Blewbury in Berkshire, where from 1782 to 1824 he employed as his curate-in-charge Morgan Jones, who achieved legendary celebrity when, on his death in 1827, his long and extraordinary obituary was widely disseminated. "The Berkshire Miser" ("Blewbury Jones" in Dickens's Our Mutual Friend), his clothes in tatters (he couldn't bring himself to wear any of his many new shirts, mending and patching just the one, which he had washed every two or three months, and "the same hat and coat served him for his every-day dress during the whole of [his tenure]"), left a fortune of £18,000. Robert Lowth (27 November 1710 ¿ 3 November 1787) Was An Oxford Professor Of Poetry, Later Bishop Of Oxford, Bishop Of London, And Declined The Position Of Archbishop Of Canterbury Due To His Health. Lowth Seems To Have Been The First Modern Bible Scholar To Have Noticed Or Drawn Attention To The Poetic Structure Of The Psalms And Much Of The Prophetic Literature Of The Old Testament. Much Commentary On The Psalms Since Derives Either Consciously Or Implicitly, Directly Or Indirectly To Some Extent From His Lectures. Lowth Is Also Remembered For His Publication In 1762 Of A Short Introduction To English Grammar. Lowth's Dogmatic Assertions Appealed To Those Who Wished For Certainty And Authority In Their Language. Lowth's Grammar Was Not Written For Children; However, Within A Decade After It Appeared, Versions Of It Adapted For The Use Of Schools Had Appeared, And Lowth's Stylistic Opinions Acquired The Force Of Law In The Schoolroom. The Textbook Remained In Standard Usage Throughout Educational Institutions Until The Early 20Th Century. Signed by John Kercheval. Seller Inventory # 029597

About this Item: Not published, Hursley, Hampshire, England, 1851. Unbound. Condition: Very good+ condition. No edition. Four page letter, written entirely in the hand of and signed by John Keble. Written from Hursley Vicarage and dated October 14, 1857, it reads: My dear Sir, I thank you much for sending me the Inscription, + for mentioning the Window. It has occurred to me that for the subject or one of the subjects of the latter there might be something appropriate, if one could get it properly treated, in the Prophet Isaiah having his lips touched by a coal of fire from the alter in the hand of an angel c. vi. 6.7. But one is almost afraid to mention it - it would require such superior skill + feeling. If your artist could submit his design before execution to some such person as Mr. Butterfield, I should say, from experience, that he would be doing on of the best things he could for his work. I should wish to give a little (I cannot afford more) to the windows - will you kindly put me down for a guinea? I will you believe me, dear Sir, yours very truly, [signed] J Keble. I have mentioned it to Professor Reed." The Butterfiled referred to in the letter is undoubtedly William Butterfield (1814 - 1900) architect. Keble was an English clergyman and poet. J. H. Newman later called Keble's sermon of July 14 1833 as the beginning of the Oxford Movement. From 1836, he was the priest of a small Parish of Hursley, Hampshire. Three years after his death, Keble College at Oxford was established (Butterfield built the chapel). Signed by Author(s). Book. Seller Inventory # 005488
