For the two great wars which successively established the independence of Holland and the disintegration of Germany are in reality but one; a prolonged Tragedy of Eighty Years. The brief pause, which in the Netherlands was known as the Twelve Years' Truce with Spain, was precisely the epoch in which the elements were slowly and certainly gathering for the renewal over nearly the whole surface of civilized Europe of that immense conflict which for more than forty years had been raging within the narrow precincts of the Netherlands. This volume contains a slight and rapid sketch of Barneveld's career up to the point at which the Twelve Years' Truce with Spain was signed in the year 1609. (Key Words: John of Barneveld, John Lothrop Motley, Netherlands, Holland, Twelve Years' Truce, Thirty Years War, Henry IV). book. Bookseller Inventory # 70635X1

Item Description: Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, London, 1862. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Three volumes. An early edition. An American diplomat, John Lothrop Motley (1814-77) spent five years in Dresden, Brussels, and the Hague to produce, in 1856, this popular history hailed by readers of the time and recognized by scholars since as a standard of the field. The lessons for modern society Motley finds in the microcosm of Holland continue to hold true in today's uncertain political environment, and his dramatic narrative and eloquent, lyrical prose remain a delight. With an autograph letter signed (ALS) from Motley to the Scottish politician, statesman, and author M.E. Grant Duff (1829-1906) affixed to a prefatory leaf in the first volume and Duff's signature on the leaf opposite the title page in all three volumes. Octavo. One-half burgundy morocco over burgundy cloth-covered boards, with handsome gilt stamping, three raised bands, and marbled endpapers. Small ink spot to the bottom edge of the second volume. The spines are a trifle sunned, with a bit of wear to the spine ends and corners; otherwise tight and very good or better. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 43690
