Malone, fly-tyer Peter Kealey and book-binder Ken Smith. This is essentially a social history of Irish angling, in the form of the diaries of John Macky, Inspector of Rivers to Lady Hamilton who owned much of the River Bann. Macky occupied the post from 1787 onwards. In 1798 the estate changed hands and a new, and thoroughly crooked, bailiff was appointed over Macky's head. Includes much of the daily life of the area around the Bann and its inhabitants in the years 1791 to 1809, as well as a detailed historical sketch of the Honorable The Irish Society which owns the fisheries of the lower Bann. "'The Judge' is an old Bann pattern (ca1850) which was devised by William Doherty of Bushmills .a well-known tier for the river Bann and its tributaries. The fly was first recorded by Francis Francis in his A Book on Angling (1867) as a fly for the river Bush." A splendid edition of a book which is both fascinating and an important part of Irish angling literature. Bookseller Inventory # 25825

A Journey Through the Austrian Netherlands. Containing: MACKY, John.]

Item Description: London: Printed for J. Pemberton, and J. Hooke, 1725, 1725. Octavo (195 x 115 mm). Near-contemporary panelled calf, titles to red label to spine, gilt decoration to spine in compartments, edges speckled red. With the ownership inscription of George Courthop, dated 10 July 1729. Slight wear to extremities, small chip to head of spine, top edge dust toned; an excellent copy. First edition. Macky, a post officer and spy, turned to travel writing in 1714 in an attempt to assuage his debts. His first work, A Journey through England in Familiar Letters, was published in 1714, and was followed by, A Journey through Scotland in 1723. A Journey through the Austrian Netherlands was "undertaken instead of a promised volume on Ireland" and "probably masked his espionage work in the territories" (ODNB). Hayhurst to the front pastedown, heir to a successful chain of dispensing chemists, based in Nelson, Lancashire: "A collector of books, in a delightful room at his home, white-painted bookshelves stacked high on all the available wall space show to advantage the hand-tooled leather bindings of a collection that has been acquired slowly and with discrimination over the years" (The Chemist and Druggist, 7 September 1957).
