Item Description: München-Leipzig, Verlag von Duncker & Humblot, 1936., 1936. Book Condition: 0. Erste dt. Ausgabe. - „[.] Exlibris a. Innendeckel. Vorderes Innengelenk etw. gelockert. Knickspuren. - Vgl. PMM 423 (die im selben Jahr erschienene engl. Erstausgabe). Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1000 Gr.-8°. Item Description: London, Macmillian and Co., 1909 Lex8vo. Entire volume XIX of The Economical Journal present. Bound in a black contemporary full cloth with gilt title-label to spine. Ex-library copy with library-code pasted on to top of front board and library book-plate to pasted down front free end-paper (Pomona College Library). A bit worn at capitals and cloth at spine somewhat "bumpy" Internally clean and fresh. Pp. 51-67. [Entire volume: ix, (3), 658, (2) pp.]. First printing of John Maynard Keynes' first published article on economics, dealing with the effect of a recent global economic downturn on India. The present article anticipates many of the theories presented in his 'The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money', one of the most important books in the history of economics."Keynes's first article, 'Recent Economic Events in India', was an attempt to link the high Indian price level of 1907, India's unfavorable balance of trade in 1908 and the effect of the resulting support of the Indian exchange rate on the London money market with the behavior of the evolving currency system [.]. The article demonstrated his grasp of institutional detail and his ability to marshal the appropriate descriptive economic statistics, while keeping his eye firmly on the underlying processes at work. His attempts to estimate the various components of India's balance of payments, particularly foreign investment in India, also led him into other discussions."(Moggridge, Maynard Keynes: an economist's biography, 1995, pp. 202-203). John Maynard Keynes is probably the most influential 20th century economist. Keynsianism is based on the idea that descisions in the private sector sometimes lead to inefficient macroeconomic outcomes and therefore advocate an active economic policy by the public sector including monetary policy actions by the central bank, which is also reflected in this early paper by the then merely 26 year old Keynes."Keynes was to dominate the international conference at Bretton Woods, out of which came the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank; and his influence during the ensuing decades, even on his theoretical opponents, has been such that a highly placed American official recently remarked that 'we are all Keynesians today'". (Printing and the Mind of Man, 423). Bookseller Inventory # 43429

The General Theory ranks with Smith’s Wealth of Nations as an intellectual event and with Malthus’ Essay on Population as a guide for public policy. Item Description: MacMillan & Company, London, 1931. First edition of Keynes' first volume of collected essays. Octavo, original green cloth. Near fine in the original dust jacket which is chipped at the head and a few other closed tears. Uncommon in the original dust jacket. The essays in this volume show Keynes's attempts to influence the course of events by public persuasion over the period of 1919-40. In the light of subsequent history, 'Essays in Persuasion' is a remarkably prophetic volume covering a wide range of issues in political economy. In articles on the Versailles Treaty, Keynes foresaw all too clearly that excessive Allied demands for reparations and indemnities would lead to the economic collapse of Germany. In Keynes's essays on inflation and deflation, the reader can find ideas that were to become the foundations of his most renowned treatise, 'The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. With startling accuracy Keynes forecast the economic fluctuations that were to beset the economies of Europe and the United States and even proposed measures which, if heeded at the time, might have warded off an era of world-wide depression. His conclusion, namely that "the regulation of the trade-cycle – that is to say the control of booms and slumps, the level of employment, the wage-scale and the flow of investment – must be the responsibility of governments", permanently altered the terms of economic debate and considerations of the role of government in managing the economy (or not). Item Description: London, Macmillan, 1936., 1936. XII, 403 S., goldgeprägter O.-Leinwand-Band (Einband minimal berieben). Item Description: London: Macmillan, 1936., 1936. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition. Printing and the Mind of Man 423. xii, 403 pp. Original cloth. Signature of former owner on flyleaf, else Very Good, without dust jacket. 'Keynes's General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (published February 1936) is probably the most influential and controversial economics book of the twentieth century. In it, Keynes claimed to have undermined the foundations of orthodox economics and to have developed a radically new way of thinking about unemployment. Some (often young) economists took up Keynesan ideas with missionary zeal, whilst others (often older) were very hostile. There was also intense controversy over what Keynes was actually saying' (Thoemmes Web site). 'John Maynard Keynes is doubtlessly one the most important figures in the entire history of economics. He revolutionized economics with his classic book, The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (1936). This is generally regarded as probably the most influential social science treatise of the 20th Century, in that it quickly and permanently changed the way the world looked at the economy and the role of government in society. No other single book, before or since, has had quite such an impact.'. Bookseller Inventory # 23799

Item Description: London Macmillan and Co, 1936. 8vo., xii + 403 + (1)pp., in the original publisher's cloth lettered gilt. A fine, bright, copy without blemish, but without a dustwrapper. First edition: first issue. One of the iconic books in the development of economic thought by one of the outstanding economists of his generation. 'The composition of this book', Keynes declares, 'has been for the author a long struggle of escape, and so must the reading of it be for most readers if the author's assault upon them is to be successful, - a struggle of escape from habitual modes of thought and expression. The ideas which are here expressed so laboriously are extremely simple and should be obvious. The difficulty lies, not in the new ideas, but in escaping from the old ones, which ramify, for those brought up as most of us have been, into every corner of our minds.' [Preface,> p. viii].
