Item Description: London: The British Academy, 1980, 1980. Octavo. Contemporary green quarter morocco, marbled paper boards, black morocco label to spine lettered in blind, cream endpapers. Light rubbing to extremities, an excellent copy. Pencil note to rear: "Bound by Alan Bell Cambridge University Binder 1982". First edition, first impression, of economist and statistician Stone's address for the Keynes Lecture in Economics, signed by the author on the half-title verso, "To Edmund with birthday greetings from Dick". The lecture series was established in 1971 at the suggestion of the British Academy's economics section and had previously hosted Lionel Robbins, J. E. Meade, and G. L. S. Shackle as speakers, among others. Stone delivered his lecture on 3 May 1978 and concluded with this statement regarding Keynes's impact on the field: "What he [Keynes] did for political arithmetic is beyond question. The charge that he should have done more for this cause or that cannot, in my opinion, be sustained. The truly remarkable thing about him is the amount he managed to accomplish. Compared with his achievements, any sins of omission seem venial and not to be remembered." Stone would be awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1984 for his critical contributions to the development of national accounts. Bookseller Inventory # 117279

Item Description: St. Louis, St. Louis, 1917. Autograph Letter Signed by J.M. Keynes To Oswald Toynbee Falk, a stockbroker and a close friend of Keynes. "[St Louis approaching New York] 11 Sept 1917. My dear Falk, I have had the enclosed letter from Herbert Samuel and have promised to do my best to secure such an article as he indicates. Will you try your hand? I should be very grateful if you would. I suspect that in your usual way you will disclaim the competence. But I would undertake to be the judge of that. In any case you might perhaps fortify yourself with collective wisdom by getting your dining party to discuss it first. I am not sure it wouldn't prove a very instructive topic. If so, perhaps I might bring Mr. Samuel as a guest? I expect to be back in England by the end of the first week of October. Sincerely yours J.M. Keynes." Written on printed letterhead of the Royal Economic Society, Kings College, Cambridge (From Mr. J. M. Keynes, Editor of the Economic Journal). Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Letters signed by Keynes seldom enter the marketplace. Oswald Falk is regarded by Robert Skidelsky as the man who understood John Maynard Keynes’ mind more than any of his contemporaries. He argues that it was Falk who gave Keynes’ his superb understanding of the unruly financial mechanism of capitalism? which distinguished his work from that of his contemporaries (Skidelsky, 1992, 25). The London stockbroker, Nicholas Davenport, recalled that Falk spent a lot of time with Keynes speculating in currency and commodity deals. According to the economist Tommy Balogh who worked for Falk it was his mentor who gave Keynes the insights to develop his theory of liquidity preference by understanding the gilt-edged securities market. Skidelsky regreted that Falk, the most perceptive contemporary Keynes-watcher did not write a memoir of Keynes when perhaps he could have. Bookseller Inventory # 3757

"Critical reaction to his great book was inconclusive. To young economists it was a 'Manifesto of Reason and Cheerfulness'. To most of their elders it was little more than an inflationist tract, 'the dying voice of the bourgeois crying in the wilderness for the profits it dare not fight for', as Joseph Schumpeter put it. Most of Keynes's Cambridge colleagues sat on the fence, shaken but sceptical". Skidelsky, Robert. John Maynard Keynes. Fighting For Britain. 1937-1946. Keynes's masterwork, written in the aftermath of the great depression of 1929 is generally considered the most influential global social science treatise of the century.
