About this Item: Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University Press, 1990., hard bound in dust jacket, 6 x 9, FINE/FINE CONDITION, .XVI, 356 pages. maps, charts and tables., NOTES, BIBLIOG, INDEX.-------------------------------------Historians of late colonial Spanish America have tended to encounter difficulties in determining how to interpret political, social, commercial, and economic developments in the viceroyalty of New Granada, established in 1739, and the viceroyalty of Peru, which, after 1776, occupied a much-reduced territory. In recent years, however, a flurry of research has opened new perspectives into the historical experiences of both viceroyalties. The ten essays in this book, all but one of which were originally presented as research papers at the Forty-Fifth International Congress of Americanists, held in Bogota in 1985, reflect the main thrust of this recent scholarship.---------------------------------------Essays in the book's first section examine different dimensions of imperial policy. Allan J. Kuethe considers the early reform efforts of Charles III. Sandra Montgomery Keelan looks at the misguided mission to regenerate New Granadan silver mining, and Juan Marchena Fernandez focuses on the role of the military in Peru and New Granada after 1750. Jacques A. Barbier discusses the attempt to draw New Granada into the imperial commercial network of the late colonial period.-------------------------------------------The second part of the book looks closely at economic conditions. Lance Grahn provides a detailed account of the debilities of the Spanish commercial system in New Granada under the early Bourbons. John R. Fisher compares the effects of the 1778 Regulation of Free Trade in the two viceroyalties, and Maurice Brungardt presents a statistical survey of New Granada's late colonial agrarian economy. The third section focuses on colonial protest and rebellion, with essays by Anthony McFarlane on the traumatic urban rebellion in Quito of 1765 and by David Cahill on the Arequipa uprising in 1780. Finally, Brian Hamnett explores the role of popular insurrection during New Granada's wars of independence.Based on a rich selection of documentary materials, these essays collectively advance new perspectives into the Bourbon empire and suggest avenues for further research.
