About this Item: London, 1762. [Shebbeare, John.] One more letter to the people of England. By their old friend. London: printed for J. Pridden, 1762. (4), 71 pp. 8vo, disbound. First edition. The last in a series of highly influential pamphlets, begun in 1755, critical of the policies of the British government during the Seven Years War. Much of this pamphlet relates to the struggle in North America, and the inadequacies of the negotiated peace. This tract is rather more scarce than the earlier ones. "Shebbeare's writings generally are vigorous and well informed, and in scurrility go little, if at all, beyond those of the chief polemical writers of the day. Walpole admitted that his pen was 'not without force,' and Boswell, who was introduced to him by General Oglethorpe, though 'his knowledge and abilities much above the class ofordinary writers.'" -- DNB. Half-title present; stain in the lower inner margins of one signature, piece torn from the blank margin of one leaf, otherwise a sound copy. Sabin 57326. Seller Inventory # CL252

Shebbeare, physician and political writer, and his Letters on the English Nation was an epistolary fiction allegedly written by an Anglicized Italian Jesuit, whose long residence in England and analytical nature had endowed him with the insight and neutrality to develop a sweeping analysis of the decline of the English constitution, morals, manners, and culture under the corrupt rule of the whigs. The selection of a Jesuit as a narrative persona encouraged allegations that Shebbeare was a Jacobite at heart. For a full bio see ODNB. Seller Inventory # 004386
