Item Description: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, New York, 1976. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First printing, 1976, stated. Inscribed, signed, and dated by Elaine Steinbeck, John's third (and last) wife, on the half-title page: "For Sumner / Warm good wishes, / Elaine Steinbeck / 1976." Elaine Anderson Steinbeck (1914-2003), whose first marriage was to actor Zachary Scott, was married to Steinbeck from 1950 until his death in 1968. A possible association copy, as the Australian then American novelist Sumner Locke Elliott (1917-1991) had a "special relationship" with Elaine, who gave a moving address at Elliott's memorial service in New York City (and was named by Sumner as the successor/executor of his last will and testament). This is speculation, as the book's provenance is lost, but "Sumner" is an unusual name. Bound in brick red cloth-covered boards with a blind imprint design on the front board and a gold-lettered spine; top page edges tinted orange. Spine slant; corners sharp, spine ends bumped. The dust jacket is price-clipped; edgewear; chipped at spine ends and corners; a one-inch closed tear at top of back panel (which has a photo of Elaine and John Steinbeck). Brodart protected.
