Item Description: Self-Published By Author, Oconomowoc Lake, Wisconsin, 1981. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: Near Fine. First Edition Assumed. 325 Pages Indexed. Covers have some light wear and the bottom cover corner has a small crease. A tight square book with no marks or stamps. Interior text pages are flawless. The author, Jean Johnson has lived all her life on Oconomowoc Lake on property her grandfather bought in 1884. She is the Self-Publisher of this superb intimate Golden Age regional history of how the Chicago and Milwaukee millionaires got their money and how they spent it in 1890. In the Lake District west of Milwaukee, the small town of Oconomowoc became the mecca of high society entertainment. One wedding houseparty lasted three weeks. Tallyhos clattered down Main Street, long brass horns wailing a warning that their tipsy passengers in high silk hats, had the right-of-way. Chicago meat packer Armour entertained Rockefeller at his 52 room lodge. Ole Evinrude finally got his motor running on Oconomowoc Lake and when this first outboard motor in the world made him rich, he bought a home here. This has the press account of the mysterious death of the theatre magnet Kohl. Over 100 pictures show the gold-plated cars. Women wearing $35,000 sable coats and diamond tiaras, and the formal gardens with statuary. All the beer barons lived along these shores: Pabst, Miller, Schlitz and Anheuser & Busch. Freddie Miller commuted to the brewery in his amphibian plane. Marjorie Montgomery Ward's big house is now a retirement home. It took three years for Bullen to build his castle. Today one can charter a purple passenger balloon to see these Victorian mansions and also the rainbow striped surf-sailboats gliding across the pretty trio of lakes at Oconomowoc. Contents in 30 Family Stories: Chicago Liquor Lord: Henry H. Shufeldt, Richest U.S. Congressman: Dan Wells & Charles Norris, Chicago Loop lot owners: Ferd Peck & Brothers, Milwaukee Real Estate Moguls: Dan & George Rogers, Chicago Cargo King: Captain Tom Parker, Chicago Wheat Gambler: John Dupee, Chicago Wagon King: Henry Schuttler & Anheuser & Busch, Chicago Tobacco Tycoon: Levi Merrick & Atty.
