Item Description: Johnston & Hoffmann, Calcutta, 1932. 1st Edition. An excellent and very clean studio portrait of Rt Hon Sir John Anderson [1882 Edinburgh-1958 London] taken when he was appointed Governor of Bengal in 1932. He wears court fress uniform and the mantle of the a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire, together with the collar of that order and other orders and decorations. The portrait is mounted on two shades of brown card signed on the inner card in Pencil "Johnston & Hoffmann, Calcutta" and on the image itself lower right in ink "John Anderson" [size of image 13.5 x 19.3cm, size of mount 25 x 35.5cm, card numbered on reverse 114421. Educated in Edinburgh and Leipzig Anderson had a distinguished career in the home service, Nigeria and Ireland before being appointed to Calcutta in 1932. He survived two assassination attempts during a troubled time in India. On his return from India he went into the House of Commons in 1938. Bookseller Inventory # 007254

Item Description: Johnston & Hoffmann, Photographers, Calcutta, 1917. The portrait shows Lord Ronaldshay [1876-1961, later 2nd Marquess of Zetland] full length wearing court dress with sword and the sash and star of the Order of the Indian Empire and is mounted on a photographer's card and signed "Ronaldshay" on the mount, minor damage ot the edge of the card and some discoloouration to the card margins but the photograph remains in excekllent condition. Ronaladshay had previously served in India as an Aide de Camp to Lord Curzon when he was Viceroy of India. He travelled widely in Asia and wrote several books inspired by his adventures of travel and sport.
