About this Item: Grant Richards n.d. [1902]., London, 1902. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1-4] 5-348 [349-352: blank] [note: last two leaves are blanks], four inserted plates with illustrations by Charles Hope Provost, original decorated gray cloth, front panel stamped in light green, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition in English, British issue. Title leaf is a cancel; appears to be made up from sheets of the 1902 Saalfield edition. A man condemned to death stays his execution by confessing to twenty-one crimes and relating the particulars of each in such a way as to be absolved of all but the very last charge, for which he is shot. The author invokes a pro-forma fantastic premise at the beginning by explaining that the stories were related to him by the hero's skull. Several feature supernatural and fantasy motifs. "With the Templars" has an extended description of a sacrilegious orgy in the cellar of a Templar monastery attended by infamous women of history. "Maimuna, and Danesh" has an Arabian-Nights-style dream sequence. "In Satan's Realm" describes the hero's adventures among satyrs and witches. Magic coins and rings are involved in an exchange of bodies made by the hero near the end of the book ("The Exchange of Bodies"). "Jokai seemed the emissary of an Oriental magician. He was the storyteller not of schemes but of dreams ." - Remenyi, Hungarian Writers and Literature, p. 166. Bleiler (1948), p. 164. Reginald 07966. Owner's signature on front free endpaper. Top edge of text block dusty, a near fine copy. (#113101). Seller Inventory # 113101

Endpapers just a bit tanned, a nearly fine copy. (#148013). Seller Inventory # 148013
