About this Item: RCA Victor, circa [1945]. [1945]., 1945. Condition: Good. RCA Victor, circa [1945]. [1945]. Good. A SUPERB BRIGHT COLOR POSTER OF THE GREAT CLASSICAL PIANIST, CONDUCTOR, MOVIE STAR, PILOT AND MOTORCYCLIST - sc A 20 inch high by 15 inch wide bright color poster printed on cardboard and distributed by RCA Victor to promote their Red Seal label recordings. The image depicts the dashing pianist-conductor-composer behind a grand piano, one hand resting on the keyboard and the other raised in anticipation. Apparently meant to be displayed in record stores, there is a remnant of cardboard from a stand still adhering to the verso. The wear and damage to the corners could easily be framed out. A superb image. Now often overlooked, Jose Iturbi was one of the best known pianists of the 1930's and 40's. A virtuoso, he was as comfortable playing classical music as he was playing the boogie- woogie. A composer and conductor as well as a musician, he often conducted from the piano. A dashing figure, he became a film star in the 1940's playing music for and appearing in MGM musicals, including Anchors Aweigh. An amateur boxer, motorcyclist and pilot, Iturbi best summed up his philosophy of life with this statement: "Life is a meal, and music is the roast beef. But who can live on only roast beef? You must have your brandy and dessert and cigar. And so I must have my boxing and my airplane and my motorcycle.". Seller Inventory # 26634

The concert included performances of works by Beethoven, Sarasate, Brahms, Paganini, Purcell, Chopin, Verdi, Bach, Wagner, Strauss, Rossini, Leo Blech, etc.A labor union, the American Guild of Musical Artists was founded in 1936, the year preceding this program, to represent opera singers who were being forced into unfair contracts. The guild soon expanded to include ballet dancers and other dancers, dance companies, opera directors and backstage employees, as well as figure skaters. At the time of the Guild's formation Lawrence Tibbett was President and Jascha Heifetz 1st Vice-President. In 1937 Howard Chandler Christy created the AGMA's logo, represented on the cover of this souvenir program, which he gifted to the guild. Seller Inventory # 36607

About this Item: 1941-1942, [S.l.], 1941. Folio. String parts = 8,9,7,6,5, other parts as required. Comprising reproductions of copyistís manuscript, each with a manuscript pastedown between bars 150-160 and extensive performance annotations; wind, brass and percussion parts in manuscript, with pastedowns and performance markings. Probably unpublished. "In 1936 he was appointed conductor of the Rochester PO, a post he held for several seasons. His connection with films began when his fingers impersonated Chopinís in A Song to Remember; he then appeared in several more films. He was the most famous Spanish pianist of his day, with a large popular following; in 1950 he became the first classical musician whose sales of a single record exceeded a million copies. Some critics held reservations about his Beethoven and Chopin, but his playing of the music of his native land was idiomatic, ebullient and vital. Iturbi composed a number of pieces in a Spanish idiom, including the Pequeña danza española for piano and a Seguidillas for orchestra" (Grove Online). Seller Inventory # 23747

About this Item: Condition: Used; Like New. Dust Jacket Condition: Used; Like New. Original program signed in pencil by the great violinist, pianist José Iturbi and baritone Lawrence Tibbett, from their January 1934 benefit concert for "Destitute German Professionals." Over the listing of program order, the three have inscribed the program in pencil to Tibbett's wife Jane, with Lawrence Tibbett himself writing: "To my Jane--the best reason in the world for singing. Larry." 11.5 x 8.5 inches; 8.5 x 21 cm. Mounted to rigid card, toned, else fine. A remarkable association. Jascha and Florence Heifetz were the hosts of the January 1934 concert, which benefited German emigrés fleeing Nazi persecution. It was a major society event, with the Hollywood Reporter writing: "Well, the Heifetzes had their musical soiree for the benefit of Destitute German Professionals that netted that worthy cause exactly fifteen thousand dollars. Four hundred people came to hear Heifetz, Iturbi and Tibbett and an extra five thousand dollars was contributed by Mrs. George Backer. Lucrezia Bori sat herself up in the very first row and conversed volubly with the performers. Chico Marx bought four tickets and brought along Mrs. Eddie Cantor and Jack Benny. [.] There was a funny incident connected with the concert. Somehow everyone thought that the other fellow had invited Professor Einstein to attend. The day before the concert, Florence Vidor called him up just to remind him and it was discovered that no one had asked him to come, and though he had heard about it he hadn't had the slightest idea of where or when it was to be held and so couldn't come because of a previous engagement."In 1936, Heifetz and Tibbett were the co-founders of the American Guild of Musical Artists, the most important labor union for solo performing artists.
