Hepperger studied mathematics, physics and astronomy in Innsbruck, Munich, Wurzburg and Vienna from 1873, passed the teaching examination in 1878 and received his doctorate in Vienna (1879). In the same year he went to the Vienna observatory, where he became an assistant (1880). In 1884 he became a private lecturer. From 1891 he was associate professor for astronomy at the University of Graz for 10 years. The chair had just been re-established, the observatory had existed since 1875, previously represented by Karl Friesach (1821-1891), Ludwig Boltzmann (1844-1906) and Johannes Frischauf(1837â"1924) "by the way" astronomy. In 1901 he became a full professor for theoretical astronomy in Vienna. From 1909 to 1928 he was director of the Vienna University Observatory . Although the focus of his work was on the field of classical (positional) astronomy, he also supported spectral analysis studies as the director of the observatory. / He was the editor and editor of W. Oeltzen's star catalog (catalog of 26060 stars). He received a prize from the Vienna Academy of Sciences for determining the orbit of Comet Biela.
