Bookseller Inventory # 107841

Item Description: Printed By James Ballantyne, At The Kelso Mail Printing Office Kelso 1801 First Edition Thus. Hardback., 1801. xx, 133pp. 8vo. 'Translated from the original French of M. Boruwlaski, and carefully revised and corrected.' Inscribed on the title page, 'Christ. Ebdon / - The Gift of the / Author, Mr. Boruwlaski'. The dedicatee = presumably, Christopher Ebdon (1744-1824), architect and brother of Thomas Ebdon (1738-1811), the organist of Durham cathedral with whose family Boruwlaski lived in his retirement. 'Count' Jozef Boruwlaski (1739-1837) was a well-born Polish dwarf who, in order to make ends meet, toured the courts of Europe throughout the second half of the eighteenth century and in his lifetime produced a number of editions of his autobiography of which this is the second. Full contemporary calf. The front board, which is detached, bears the 1797 Thomas Bell bookplate which has a well-contested claim to be the work of Thomas Bewick. Front free endpaper chipped at two corners and also detached. Spine rather chipped and faded. Small chip at top of ffep. Otherwise very good. Bookseller Inventory # C13206
