Item Description: Grant and Griffith, London, 1850. Half Leather. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Weir, Harrison; Absolon, John (illustrator). First Edition. Charming and very scarce pocket sized book. Wonderful colour plates illustrating each tale are probably hand coloured and engraved. The half leather binding is holding together nicely if a trifle loose, although there is wear to the extermities as you might expect. Two or three pages have had substantial pieces torn off at some point in the book's history but most are in clean condition. The colour plates are all stunningly attractive and well preserved. What an absolutely charming children's book. NO EXTRA POSTAGE WILL BE CHARGED OVER STANDARD RATES REGARDLESS OF WEIGHT OF BOOK WITHIN UK. POST WITHIN 2 DAYS. ALWAYS SECURELY PACKED AND PROMPTLY DESPATCHED. PLEASE PHONE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION. Bookseller Inventory # 005032

Very scarce first edition of Joseph Cundall's retelling of 21 classic children's tales inc Simple Simon, Little Bo-Peep, Tom the Piper's son and the Three Bears, in which Cundall made the female lead a young girl rather than an old women, although it was half a century later she was first called Goldilocks. Norwich-born Cundall, who published the book in association with Grant and Griffith, was a children's book publisher and prominent Victorian photographer. Half-leather covers on brown buckram boards with four raised bands, gilt title and rules, brown endpapers, unpaginated. More than 100 hand-coloured illustrations, inc milk-maid frontis. Brown endpapers. Charming note of provenance (dated 1934) lightly attached to ffep verso. Boards have wear and rubbing all round, with a few light marks. Joints and hinges are splitting, but holding. Page edges dusty and foxed with modest foxing throughout text bloc. Previous owner's stamp on front endpaper and another name on ffep.
