About this Item: J.L. Wheeler, Benson, VT, 1968. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. Signed with signed TLS. Shelf wear to tip, corners and edges of the book, no jacket. Clean and unmarked. Inscribed by the author to a neighbor on Sept. 1, 1968. Seldom seen signed as many copies were distributed posthumously. Also laid-in is a signed TLS describing the book and the research that led to it. Being located in Benson many copies have passed through my hands. I have never before seen this letter. "Reprinted from Vermont history magazine, April, July, October 1959 . with a few alterations and with new material including illustrations and redrawn maps." Printed in a single edition of 1000 copies, this is one of 600 with the folding color plate of the Hubbardton battlefield tipped in. Joseph Wheeler spent nearly 25 years determining the route of the road that connected Rutland to Mt. Independence, the American built fort across from Ticonderoga. It was along this road that men and supplies moved to the Orwell, Vermont fort and over which the Americans withdrew on July 6, 1777. The next day the British and Brunswick troops caught up with the retreating Americans in Hubbardton where a holding action was fought allowing the bulk of the American force to disperse. The Continental troops regrouped and acheived a decisive victory over the British several weeks later at Saratoga. A bit uncommon. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hard Cover. Books and other items ship promptly with a tracking number and(generally over $15.00) jacket protectors if applicable. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible. The Book Shed has a been a member of the Vermont Antiquarian Bookseller's Association since 1997. Seller Inventory # 2002904
