About this Item: ReInk Books, 2017. SoftCover. Condition: New. Reprinted from 1836 edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. About this Item: J. Schranz and A. Percheron [Paris: Frick Freres], Constantinople, 1870. Hand-finished colour lithograph, on stone by A. Bayot. Excellent condition. Richly coloured image of the Bachi-Bouzouks, the Ottoman Empire's mercenary cavalry This image of the fierce bachi-bouzouks appeared in Joseph (Giuseppe) Schranz' Album de Constantinope , circa 1865. Bachi-bouzouk or bazibozuklar meant "not having the same hats or heads", referring to the irregular nature of their clothing and arms They were also, inevitably, undisciplined and seem to have come and gone as they liked. They were mercenary cavalry, quite tribal and quite deadly, and not unlike the Cossacks. The irregular nature of their military behavior and commitment amused the French, for whom "Bachi-Bouzouk" became a term of derision, nevertheless, as illustrated here in Schranz' portrait, the bachi-bouzouk were tough, heavily armed fighters, more pirates of the plains than regular cavalry, intimidating and effective.
