Manuscript fable by this well known Seattle poet. 6 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches. [20] pp. Written on rectos only in a very legible hand in black ink. Hand-bound in quarter brown cloth over marbled boards. A bit cocked and a water splash on first leaf (not defacing any letters). Very good. The fable concerns the wondrous journey of Desperada in search of the true Rose; "A true Rose is the flower of a loving heart, an inquiring mind, and a tranquil soul." She is helped by various fantastic creatures along the way: Hero who takes her flying in her search; Shooting-Star-Child who is her guide; Fire-dancer; Wayfarer; First-Mate and others. After confronting various hindrances to her search and overcoming them, Desperada finally finds the true Rose that, like all things of value, was within her the whole time. This manuscript, from the Seattle estate of J. Roche, is inscribed by the author - "Judith gave this book to Louise R. Sullivan, Christmas 1978." On the next free endpaper we also read "Louise Sullivan Bagby gives this book to Judith Roche on the eve of her second wedding, Sept. 5, 1980, with a few slight additions."Judith Roche was a poet and the author of three collections of poetry. They are Myrrh/My Life as a Screamer, Ghost and recently, Wisdom of the Body, which won a 2007 American Book Award. She was also co-editor of First Fish, First People: Salmon Tales of the North Pacific Rim, which also won an American Book Award, and edited a number of poetry anthologies. Roche worked in collaboration with visual artists on several public art projects which are installed in the Seattle area. Roche was Literary Arts Director Emeritus for One Reel, an arts producing company, and teaches poetry workshops. Her work has appeared in Exquisite Corpse, Pebble Review, Wandering Hermit, and several anthologies. She conducted poetry workshops for adults and youth in prisons and was a fellow of Black Earth Institute. She was the 2007 Distinguished Writer at Seattle University. Roche was a founding member of Red Sky Poetry Theater. She died on November 14, 2019.
