" ( juin 1893, in Mac Clure's magazine). Ouvrage orné d'illustrations originales de L. Benett. Bel exemplaire. Item Description: New York: F. M. Lupton, 1893. Soft cover. Book Condition: Good. A Trip to the Moon signed by Neil Armstrong. 58 pp. Original wrappers. Several leaves stained, some wear. Printed on pulp paper. No. 36 of The Arm Chair Library, a ten cent weekly. Half morocco case. Signed by Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon. This classic of science fiction, turned into scientific fact by Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission, was first published as De la Terre à la Lune in 1865. Verne’s reputation as the inventor of the science fiction novel rests primarily on From the Earth to the Moon. Verne’s novel, set in post-Civil War America, presents the tale of the development and financing of a grand scheme to launch a manned vehicle to go to the Moon. The book was eerily accurate in its predictions concerning the feat. Verne described a three-man crew launched from Florida in a cylindro-conical vehicle called the Columbiad (Apollo 11’s was the Columbia). Like Apollo 11, the vehicle used retrorockets, the men experienced weightlessness, and they returned from the Moon and ultimately splashed down in the Pacific. During his return from the Moon, Neil Armstrong spoke to the people of Earth, stating in part, “A hundred years ago, Jules Verne wrote a book about a voyage to the Moon. His spaceship, Columbia, took off from Florida and landed in the Pacific Ocean after completing a trip to the Moon. It seems appropriate to us to share with you some of the reflections of the crew as the modern-day Columbia completes its rendezvous with the planet Earth and the same Pacific Ocean tomorrow ” Verne underscored his emphasis on science when he compared his work with that of H. G. Wells: “I do not see the possibility of comparison between his work and mine. We do not proceed in the same manner. It occurs to me that his stories do not repose on a very scientific basis. I make use of physics. He invents. I go to the moon in a cannon-ball, discharged from a cannon. Here there is no invention. He goes to Mars in an airship, which he constructs of a metal which does not obey the law of gravitation. Ça c’est très joli but show me this metal. Let him produce it.” “I’m sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for Wells and Verne” (Arthur C. Clarke). “[Verne’s] first books, the shortest, Around the World and From the Earth to the Moon, are still the best in my view. Over the last forty years, they have had an influence unequalled by any other books on the children of this and every country in Europe” (Leon Blum, 1905). A wonderful association item linking the giants of literary and real space travel. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # ABE-1509565205874

Item Description: France not published Oct. [18]97. A fine late nineteenth century black and white "woodbury process" photograph from 1877 of the author in formal profile. The photograph is ovular and tipped onto a contemporary cream paper backing featuring an engraved ovular border for the photograph and with JULES VERNE handsomely printed below. Presented with the photograph is the author’s calling card with his name printed in the center. On the card Verne has written in French a friendly note in response to a previous correspondence. The card is dated October ‘97 and is neatly signed by the author. Ovular photograph measures approximately 4.5 by 3.5 inches on a decorative backing approximately 8 by 6.75 inches, calling card approximately 3.5 by 2.25 inches., All handsomely mounted together under grey board with beveled edges, glazed and in a wide antique heavily-gilded wooden frame for a total presentation measuring over 16 by 12 inches. The photograph and calling card are both beautifully fresh and fine with no wear. The antique frame with some chipping to the gilt but still very sturdy and handsome. A DELIGHTFUL TREAT FOR ANY LOVER OF THE WORKS OF JULES VERNE. Verne is perhaps unique in the annuals of literature for his fantastical combination of imagination, humor, wit and surprisingly accurate prophetic visions. In his famed science fiction novels, such as FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON and TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, he predicted such things as nuclear powered submarines, an American space launch to the Moon taking place from central Florida and various other imaginative forms of powered aviation. His many novels were all originally written and published in French but were so internationally popular and well received that American and English translations were almost instantaneously produced. His light hearted approach, often even to serious subjects, and rollicking style of prose have insured the popularity of his novels for generations. Bookseller Inventory # 17828

Item Description: Verdigris Press, Octon, France, 2004. One of 38 copies only, all on Hahnemuhle paper, each copy hand-numbered and signed by the artist Judith Rothchild and the printer, Mark Lintott. Page size: 11-3/4 inches x 5-15/16 inches; 4 leaves + colophon printed on gray paper mounted on inside rear cover. Bound by Mark Lintott: leporello style, but on the vertical, original screen prints by Judith Rothchild in subtle shades of gray on the front and back boards, with gray silk ribbon pull at bottom of front board, housed in publisher's clamshell box of gray paper, title printed in black on front panel, lined with screen prints made by Rothchild in shades of gray, fine. Jules Verne's poem was written in 1848 when the author was just 20. The poem literally passes through a storm before reaching safe haven on the other side. The text is superimposed on a series of four of Rothchild's ominous mezzotints which start with a threatening sky, go to the complete blackness of the storm and then to clouds quickly moving to sunlight. The text is hand set and letterpress printed in Vendome romain on an Albion press by Mark Lintott. Considering world events of 1848, Verne shows himself to be an optimist with this moving verse admirably served by Rothchild's handsome images which really give a sense of the speed and drama of the storm. Meticulously crafted, this is a lovely book. Selected for inclusion in Wellesley College exhibition and catalogue, RESONANCE AND RESPONSE (2005). Bookseller Inventory # 9500
