About this Item: Aldershot: For Private Circulation Only, (Printed by Gale & Polden, Ltd.,) 1925, 1925. Octavo (208 x 119 mm). Contemporary binding of "native" black morocco-grain cloth (label of E. J. Motiwalla & Co., stationers, Penang & Singapore), red label, pale grey endpapers. Small white blemish at head of spine, touch of discolouration in places (no doubt from having survived a tropical climate). A good, clean, if rather tightly-bound copy. Frontispiece portrait, 44 illustrations on 23 plates, 23 maps (all but one folding), title page with regimental crest and battle honours on banderoles. First edition, first impression, in an appealing (if somewhat utilitarian) contemporary "native" binding; the regiment's history was continued in volumes published in 1955 and 1985. "The three Bns are dealt with separately - 1st Bn in full, for its entire span through to 1919, 2nd Bn from its formation in 1904 onwards, and 3rd Bn quite briefly because it was formed only in 1917. The narrative is based partly upon official records and partly upon the reminiscences of officers who served. The result is a book easy to read and full of useful information" (Perkins). This copy has, loosely inserted, the 4-page order of service for the "Recruits Attestation Parade" (24 January 1959) of 2nd King Edward VII's Own Goorkhas (The Sirmoor Rifles). One of the most elusive of Gurkha regimental histories: Copac locates just three copies (BL, IWM, King's College London), OCLC adds another fifteen worldwide. Perkins, Regiments, p.503.
