About this Item: APH Publishing Corporation, 2007. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. The increasing awareness and interest in Environmental impact analysis in aquatic ecosystem has led to a multitude of Research studies in the present decade in different aspects of environmental quality. The interest is now shifted from studies of changes in environmental quality of aquatic ecosystem due to Pollution to its impact on biota, and ways and means to preserve the Natural quality of aquatic ecosystem. Pollution of the major Rivers of India through discharge of Industrial effluents and City sewage has posed a major threat in recent Times and ways and means are being required to cope up with the same. Though by dilution, precipitation and oxidation, rivers are able to purify large volume of effluents and city sewage. However, there is a definite limit to the amount with which any particular River can deal without being seriously affected. Thus, it has to be decided what can and just what can not be allowed to enter in the river at various points along its course, so proper Balance may be maintained between various interest involved. Clearly the Standards will vary from place to place. Once Government, industries, fishermen, chemists, engineers and Biologists are all aware of the problems involved and when they are able to collaborate in a rational manner the problem will not prove it be very difficult to solve. Thus the key to control pollution is co-operation. River Damodar, which flows through the coal belt of Jharkhand, is a seriously polluted river system, receiving industrial effluents from fertilizer factory, cement factory, coal washeries, mica factory, Steel Plants and etc. It is in this Context that the research work has undertaken to assess effects of effluents to the biotic community in a limited stretch or river Damodar at Sindri (Dhanbad). As the human Population rises, the in-dustrialization increases, Water requirements rapidly approach the Limits of available Supply and in a short time exceed the supply in most cases. This is how the present aquatic pollution in the Country has come to be localized at a particular stretches of the different river systems of the country. Should the water quality of Indian rivers and streams get degraded beyond certain limits, the situation may go out of control, which may not only adversely affect all uses of water is put to, such as domestic, agriculture, aquaculture, industrial, recreational, aesthetic, navigational, and power generation, etc. but the entire aquatic ecosystem may be thrown out of gear and may head towards a severe Biological imbalance. The latter, if it happens, would be an ecological disaster. Printed Pages: 192. Seller Inventory # 37316

About this Item: Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd., 2006. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. This multi-authored text on Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Disorders is divided in 8 sections, with a total of 24 comprehensive chapters and an appendix. A galaxy of internationally respected contributors have provided an authoritative text on the epidemiology and economics of dry eye, the pathophysiology, the current diagnostic and treatment practices, surgical aspects of ocular surface disorders, the present status of surgeries like amniotic membrane transplantation. Few other important issues such as dry eyes in contact lens wearers and dry eye seen during pregnancy and menopause are also discussed. The exhaustive list of chapters and authors may mean there could be some overlap of information between different chapters. However, I feel that this will be useful as each author has given his/her own unique perspective to the topic and the reader can draw his own conclusions based on this diverse opinion base, supported by facts. The contributors have strived to bring together not just the current clinical concepts but also to compile the latest available research information on the topic. In this era of focus on cost-effectiveness of medical treatment, ignoring the financial aspects would be to our own peril; and therefore, the section on the economics of dry eyes has been included to bring a unique perspective to the problem. Printed Pages: 368. Seller Inventory # 24095
