About this Item: University of Texas Press, United States, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. While some scholars would argue that there was no Iraq before King Faysal s coronation in 1921, Iraqi history spans fourteen centuries of tribal communities that endured continual occupation in their historic homeland, including Mongol invasions in the thirteenth century and subsequent Ottoman and British invasions. An Iraqi identity was established long before the League of Nations defined the nation-state of Iraq in 1932. Drawing on neglected primary sources and other crucial accounts, including memoirs and correspondence, Reclaiming Iraq puts the 1920 revolt against British occupation in a new light-one that emphasizes the role of rural fighters between June and November of that year. While most accounts of the revolution have been shaped by the British administration and successive Iraqi governments, Abbas Kadhim sets out to explore the reality that the intelligentsia of Baghdad and other cities in the region played an ideological role but did not join in the fighting. His history depicts a situation we see even today in conflicts in the Middle East, where most military engagement is undertaken by rural tribes that have no central base of power. In the study of the modern Iraqi state, Kadhim argues, Faysal s coronation has detracted from the more significant, earlier achievements of local attempts at self-rule. With clarity and insight, this work offers an alternative perspective on the dawn of modern Iraq. Seller Inventory # AAJ9780292756892

About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. In the small hours of Monday morning, the 2nd May 2011, US President Obama announced to the world that Osama bin Laden and the head of al-Qaida - the most notorious terrorist group of our time - had been killed in Pakistan by special American task forces. The most sought terrorist in the world was dead, but the ideology of violence and terror that he and his followers have embraced is still alive. It is said that terrorism is as old as history. It has operated under number of names and emerged under variety of banners. It is a violent act that targets civilians to advance an ideological or political cause. Today terrorism is taking cover under Islam. Over the centuries Islam has co-existed, interacted with religions, cultures and civilizations. In general, the outcome has been humane and colourful societies - so why now is Islam used as an incubator of violence? What are the foundations of Islam, its message and the way it relates itself to other monotheist religions? In short, what do we know about Islam? More importantly, what do young Muslims who kill themselves and devastate the lives of others know about their religion? Do they know that suicide is considered to be a great sin in Islam? And do they know that killing an innocent soul is an unforgivable crime in Islam? Do they know also that hate preachers are promoting their own anomalous Islam? The answers to those and many more questions are methodically explored in this book. Seller Inventory # APC9781530605712
