Item Description: Prague: Odeon, 1930. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Octavo, wrappers, 243pp. Part 2 of the “Of Humor, Clowns and Dadaists” that completes the series. This volume is comprised of essays that appeared in various journals, including the surrealist once-off Zverokruh. This second installment is noteworthy for its marked departure in design from the Devetsil elements of making up the first volume. Here the typography and book design is reduced to a strong constructivist approach throughout, with a strict, businesslike presentation, all subjugated to the text. These essays were written from 1928 to 1930 and the book released in May 1931 despite the publisher’s date of 1930; the last essay is dated February of that year. Includes 1/2-tone reproductions of works by de Chirico, Man Ray, Josef Sima, Arp, Schwitters, Klee et al. The paper thin cover worn, rear cover spots. No copies of this first edition found in North American libraries. Bookseller Inventory # 4707

Item Description: Prague: Olymp, sv. 7-8, 1927. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Quarto 24 x 16cm., wrappers, 192pp., 28 plates. Cover and book design by Teige. A collection of Teige’s ideas on Poetism, which rejected any sense of elitism in the arts, especially poetry, which he viewed as the distanciation from a living art. Poetism calls for the industrial arts to integrate with the fine arts and integrate in everyday experience and usage. This is couched in the context of a revolutionary ideology and leans towards constructivist idealism. It is one the author’s most original contributions to 20th century esthetics. Stavba a básen' is a high point of the devetsil movement and is the author’s confession of a vision that he would strive towards continuously. Illustrated with examples of the international avant-garde of the day, including le Corbusier, Lissitzky, Picasso and many others, as well as the leading exponents in Czechoslovakia, Styrský and Toyen. This copy inscribed by Teige to F. Gökari, 1927. Inscribed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # ABE-733857165

Item Description: Prague: Odeon, 1928. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Octavo, wrappers, 91(iv) pp. 7 plates, with photo-collage cover by Teige. Six b/w illustrations by Grosz, Léger, others and seven photographic plates, book design by Teige. This forms Part I of the series O humoru clownech a dadaistech. It is comprised of essays composed from 1924 to 1926. Both this and its sequel, along with other work written by Teige at the time, examines the function of laughter and absurdity and its unique function in human life. It also was Teige's critical appraisal of dada --- he would praise it for clearing the ground of the old, but reject it as a part of the past, whereas constructivism was the path of the new; he would incorporate the humor and absurdity in his constructivism nonetheless, as a counterweight to the rational bias. This is a classic devetsil work. Despite its renown, only one copy of this first edition found in North America libraries. 800. Bookseller Inventory # 4706

Item Description: Prague: Umelecka beseda & Druzstveni prace, 1941. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 4to, cloth, 312 pages, in an edition of 1000, with a signed lithograph by Zrzavy, numerous color tipped in reproductions and b/w photo reproductions, in dust jacket. A catalogue raisonné of the work of Zrzavy to date, this book also was a strong rallying-point of Czech national pride under the oppression of the German occupation and dismemberment of the country. Jan Zrzavy (1890-1977) was one of the strong personalities of the Czech modern art world. He lived through and participated in many of the Czech movements, beginning with Sursum in 1910 through Devetsil and thereafter stood out as an isolated individual pursuing his own path away from the avant-garde movements of constructivism and surrealism. He was tolerated under both the Nazis and communists, largely because they found his work politically inoffensive, but they failed to understand the strong undercurrent of his championing a spiritual and especially Czech spiritual mentality and he, like the illustrator Josef Lada, came to represent what many Czechs like to consider unique to themselves. At the point this book was published, Zrzavý had executed a portrait of Karel Hynek Mácha, the famous Bohemian poet of the 19th century who was seen to rescue the Czech language from near-extinction. This image became a clandestine point of power and furthered a will to survive under continued denigrating circumstances. The book had a similar value to the reading public. This is a rare book, in very good condition overall, with a clipped upper dust wrapper. 2500.00. Signed by Illustrator(s). Bookseller Inventory # 51

Item Description: Prague: F. Borovy, 1921-44; 1946-48, 1921. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Quarto, octavo, various original bindings (boards, cloth and wrappers). Zivot (Life) was an important art journal, various editors, running from 1921 to 1948 except for 1945. In 1922 under the editorship of architect Jaroslav Krejcar and Karel Teige, it became briefly a flagship of the avant-garde and arm of Devetsil, and that annual is much sought-after with important articles and graphics heralding the Devetsil movement. There it announced Czech art and design to be in synch with the leading experiments in international modernism. Some years were released as annuals alone, others came in segments of ten issues. The journal’s subtitle ranges from „Art Review“ to „Review of Art & Literature“ to „Papers on the Fine Arts and Artistic Culture“ with a few further variants. Aside from the 1922 edition, it was generally dedicated to all aspects of art history, with emphasis on more recent developments but as a continuum with past traditions. There are a host of original graphics by Czech artists throughout, including a signed woodcut by Josef Šíma and stamped litho by František Tichý, a number of linocuts by Josef Capek, original woodcuts by Sedlácek and others. While the greatest emphasis was on painting, graphics and sculpture of all periods in art history, there are also interesting treatments of current architectural and stage design. There are also important poems, treatises and critical reviews by the Czech illuminati of the day. Complete, all published. Very uncommon, with one incomplete holding in North America.
