Der Berufsabenteurer, Cavalier und Colporteur Baron Carl Ludwig von Pöllnitz (1692-1775) nahm sich sämtlicher Affären und Mätressen des Fürsten an er hatte zuverlässige Gewährsleute , porträtierte die Damen, rekonstruierte Liebeswerbungen, plauderte über Festlichkeiten am überaus verbuhlten sächsischen Hof und bot diese erotische Biographie dem Fürsten gegen ein Schweigegeld an was dieser aber souverän überging. 1734, ein Jahr nach seinem Tod, erschien das Buch, erlebte gleich mehrere Raubdrucke und wurde zum Bestseller. Die hier vorliegende neue Übersetzung (das Original ist selbstverständlich französisch), behält ein wenig vom barocken Sprachduktus bei und macht Das galante Sachsen zum reizvollen Lesevergnügen. Nicht allein wegen des stets balzbereiten August man hat bis zu 45o natürliche Kinder gezählt! , sondern weil Pöllnitz bei aller amüsanten Indiskretion auch ein fesselnder Erzähler ist und die Gepflogenheiten des absolutistischen Hofes, die Reisen quer durch Europa, die versunkene Prachtentfaltung so lebendig schildert, daß August der Starke am Ende fast familiär vertraut erscheint.
