Item Description: Houghton, Mifflin and Company Boston, MA 1907, 1907. 144 pp. 15 x 22.4 cm. Decorated grey cloth on board, worn. Local dedication signed by Kate Douglas Wiggin is inserted after ffep, and 1976 program is inserted in back of book. Good. This is an unusual copy of this delightful book, because it includes a special dedication "To the Dorcas Society of Hollis and Buxton (Maine) by Kate Douglas Wiggin, 1907" and is signed by her. The dedication, inserted after the first free endpaper, is identical to the one that follows the title page, except for the front panel and signature. In her dedication Kate Wiggin tells about the origin of the Dorcas society, which was real, but notes that the romance of Nancy Wentworth and Justin Peabody is her own tale. Wiggin founded the Dorcas society in 1897. Although her teaching and writing career spanned from California to England, she had a long and happy relationship with Hollis, ME and towns along the Saco river, the locus of this book. The book is wonderfully illustrated by Alice Barber Stephens and each page contains green Christmas border design. The color frontispiece shows young Nancy Wentworth in the old pew, darning a faded cushion. This copy also contains an inserted mimeograph program from a production of "The Old Peabody Pew" by the New Castle, NH Bicentennial Commission, in 1976. Bookseller Inventory # 4819
