About this Item: William Heinemann Ltd, London, 1937. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. 1st Edition. 13.2 x 19.5cm fuchsia cloth boards with gilt stamped titles to the front and spine and blind stamped publisher's device to the rear; with beige endpapers (xii), 345 (1blank) pp. Signed and inscribed by O'Brien to fellow Heinemann author, Margery Allingham to the first blank page. Together with original unclipped dust jacket priced at 7s 6d net. The boards are very bright with a little mottling to the rare board and a slight tide mark along the spine. There is some bruising to the fore edge corners mainly the top rear corner and a couple of tiny dings to the fore edge of the lower board and back panel. Internally there is a little light foxing to the preliminaries and fore edge only. The inscription is dated August 1937 and we know the recipient was Marjery Allingham because the book was bought with a number of volumes from her library containing her name including a signed limited presentation copy of 'Challenge to the Reader' from Ellery Queen to Margery Allingham. The dust jacket is in original condition and without tape or other repairs. It is a little damp marked and wrinkled to the rear (see image) and is rubbed with minor loss to the corners and four small chips to the spine the largest being 8mm x 6mm, but none of the title has been lost. There are also a number of closed tears and a little creasing to the top and bottom edges. The dust jacket is now protected in a removable archival jacket. Kate O'Brien is increasingly regarded as a significant early 20th Century writer. Many of her books dealt with issues of female agency and sexuality in ways that were new and radical at the time. She was extremely popular in the 1930s and1940s before falling into obscurity for decades, only to be rediscovered as a key writer in the 1980s. An unusual, scarce signed volume. If you would like any further information or images, please do not hesitate to ask.   . Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 001082

About this Item: William Heinemann Ltd, London, 1936. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. O'NEILL, Mary (illustrator). 1st Edition. 13.2 x 19.5cm tan cloth boards with gilt stamped titles to the front & spine and blind stamped publisher's device to the rear. Beige endpapers, (x), 229 (1blank) pp including black and white frontispiece and 12 illustrations by Mary O'Neill. Signed and inscribed by O'Brien to fellow Heinemann author, Margery Allingham, to the first blank page. Together with original unclipped dust jacket priced at 7s. 6d. The boards have been well protected by the dust jacket are clean and bright with only a little cockling to the front board. Internally, the book is clean with only very light spotting to the prelims. The inscription is dated August 1936 and we believe the recipient was Margery Allingham despite the misspelling of her name, because the book was bought in Colchester (where she died) with a number of volumes from her library containing her name including a signed limited presentation copy of 'Challenge to the Reader' from Ellery Queen to Margery Allingham. The book also has the initials M.Y.C. on the front free endpaper. Allingham's married name was Youngman Carter. We also have her next novel, Farewll Spain, similarly inscribed but with the correct spelling. The dust jacket is in original condition and without tape or other repairs. It is vg- noting the fact that it is in two pieces, split along the lower joint. It is somewhat creased and rubbed and the back panel is darkened with spots and ink marks. There is loss to the fore edge corners, chips of 1-2cm from the head of the spine and less to the foot. There are also a number of closed tears along the top and bottom edges (see images). That said, it presents far better than it sounds in the removable, clear archival jacket that now protects it. Kate O'Brien is increasingly regarded as a significant early 20th Century writer. Many of her books dealt with issues of female agency and sexuality in ways that were new and radical at the time as does this novel that concerns a young woman's experiences in Spain. Indeed this book was considered so radical that it was banned in her native Ireland. She was extremely popular in the 1930s and1940s before falling into obscurity for decades, only to be rediscovered as a key writer in the 1980s. An unusual and very scarce signed volume. If you would like any further information or images, please do not hesitate to ask.   . Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 001081
