Book
Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 554-557. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Lengthwise folded, somewhat dog-eared, first author's name underlined on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: On the one hand histories of medicine and anatomy emphasize the fact that autopsies on the human body were not performed in the Latin West from late antiquity until the end of the thirteenth century. On the other they have little to say about the situation in the Greek East during this period. The general impression they leave, however, is that the Byzantines too did not practice human dissection. To the best of our knowledge only Owsei Temkin has toyed with the idea that this might not have been the case. At a recent conference on Byzantine medicine we discovered that between us we could in fact document the practice of dissecting the human body for the better part of the Byzantine period. Perhaps the texts supporting our claim are not well known to historians of medicine because they were not written by Byzantine medical personnel, but rather by theologians, historians and men of letters. In any case, we believe that these texts are not widely known and would be of great interest to scholars. We therefore offer translations of the relevant passages and a few comments. - Wikipedia: Alexander Petrovich Kazhdan (Alexander Petrowitsch Kaschdan; * 3. September 1922 in Moskau; 29. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Condition: New. Byzantium, that dark sphere on the periphery of medieval Europe, is commonly regarded as the immutable residue of Rome's decline. Cambridge / Paris; Cambridge University Press / Éditions de la Maison des Sciences de L'Homme, 1984. (Past and Present Publications). 23,5x15 cm. xiv, 298, (1, 5 blank) pp. Publisher's boards with printed dustjacket. Jacket is slightly faded at spine and partly toned. A fine copy. "Byzantine literature is often regarded as little more than an agglomeration of stereotyped form and generic conventions which allow no scope for political thought or expression. Accordingly, histories of Byzatine literature tend to focus on the history of genres. The essays in this book challenge the traditional view. They attempt to show the coherence and individuality of not of genre but of author. By careful analysis of all the works of a given writer, regardless of genre, these studies aim to reach behaind the facade of convention, to discover not only biographical facts, but also the writer's own likes and dislikes, his social views, his political sympathies and antipathies, his ethical and aesthetic standards."(front flap). From the library of Swedish classical scholar Gertrud Lindberg.
