First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition photographic softcover wraps. Includes Acknowledgments; Introduction; and Index. Profusely illustrated with historic black-and-white photographs. First Edition per the copyright page: "First published 2004". "Chestnut Hill was home to some of America's most affluent and socially elite families at the beginning of the twentieth century. They engaged pre-eminent architects to design their houses in the latest styles, leaving Chestnut Hill with a rich architectural legacy. It was also a destination for immigrants. Stonemasons from Italy came to build the splendid estates. Irish families escaping poverty worked as domestic servants, gardeners, and chauffeurs. People of all backgrounds crossed paths on Germantown Avenue, where shopkeepers saw to the needs of the rich and modest alike. This busy artery was Chestnut Hill's link to downtown Philadelphia. Trolleys, railroads, hospitals, and the Wissachickon Creek were all part of the Chestnut Hill story. Chestnut Hill Revisited uses photographs unearthed from family albums and historical archives to show the area as it once was. Elizabeth Farmer Jarvis is the curator of the Chestnut Hill Historical Society and formerly of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. She and Thomas Keels co-authored Chestnut Hill. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all." -- from the rear outer cover.

First Edition Signed
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First printed in 2003'). From the Images of America series. Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page ( 'To _______ and ________, With best wishes, Thomas H. Keels'). As you can see from the photos, the covers are exceptionally clean and free of any conspicuous wear. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages look terrific, exceptionally clean, bright. I don't see any creasing. No markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There is one tiny imperfection. On the Contents page the 'd' and 's' in 'The Woodlands' (which is the title of the third chapter) have been a little rubbed away, mostly the 's'. I'm guessing there was something penciled there that was erased and it removed just a bit of the print. It's quite minor and I've provided a photo. There are a great many photographs throughout the book, several on most of the pages. They are all in excellent condition. 'Philadelphia, the birthplace of America, is the final resting place of some of the nations greatest citizens. The burial grounds of Christ Church hold the remains of Benjamin Franklin and six other signers of the Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia pioneered the development of the rural cemetery with the establishment of Laurel Hill, eternal home to Gettysburg hero George Gordon Meade and thirty-nine other Civil War-era generals. In Philadelphia's Jewish, Catholic, and African-American burial grounds rest such notable figures as Rebecca Gratz, model for the Jewish heroine of Walter Scott's Ivanhoe; John Barry, Catholic father of the U.S. Navy; and Octavius Catto, and African-American civil-rights leader of the 19th century. Finally, there are the vanished cemeteries, such as Monument, Lafayette, and Franklin. Transformed into playgrounds and parking lots, the cemeteries were obliterated with sometimes horrific callousness. Philadelphia Graveyards And Cemeteries tells the intriguing history of these burial grounds, whether revered or long forgotten.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
