Item Description: 1893. Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good. [EHON] HASEGAWA Keika, artist. KEIKA HYAKUGIKU. Kyoto: Yamada Naosaburo; Tanaka Jihei, Meiji 26 [1893]. 2 vols. (of 3), 30.8 x 22.8 cm. 50 large [some double-page] color woodcut plates of chrysanthemums. An interesting work, here in its first published form, printed by Torii Matashichi. Not in Mitchell, Ryerson or Bartlett & Shiohara. A copy is in the Dawes catalogue of the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Certainly not unknown in Japan, but a scarce book abroad. This copy, in off-white wrappers, is a very good early impression in lovely delicate colors - more beautiful than the Unsodo reprint of 1903. It appears that the fourth and final volume (to bring the total number of illustrations to 100) was never done. Here the first two volumes are available in lovely impression, colors and condition. In a modern clasped case. Bookseller Inventory # 87758

Item Description: Japan, Meji 36 (1904). 3 volumes. 4to (315 x 225mm). With 75 colour woodblock prints, 9 prints on double page. In original stitched bindings (preserved in a recent Japanese style cloth box). A reissue of the Kyoto 1893 edition. A beautiful and decorative album of Japanese chrysanthemums, several of the plates have hand finishing. The chrysanthenum is probably the most popular Japanese flower and of great symbolic importance. A yearly festival of 'happiness' is held in Japan to celebrate this magnificent flower. The present work is one of the most attractive Japanse flower books, printed in lovely delicate colours, and of a high artistic level. The work is rare and Kerlen only quotes the first volume of the 1893 edition. The 1904 and 1893 editions are identical. A fine copy.Kerlen 814. Bookseller Inventory # 8309

Item Description: Kyoto: Tanaka Jihei & Yamada Naosaburo, July & December 1893., 1893. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 2 Volumes. small folio. [ff. 27; ff. 27]. text in Japanese. calligraphy by Yusaku. 50 colour woodblock prints of chrysanthemums by Hasegawa (4 double-page, some with added hand-colour). original wrs. (wrs. with some light soiling & slight chipping at inner edges). The colour woodblocks present a beautiful display of fifty different varieties of chrysanthemums, Japans national flower. Originating in China, the chrysanthemum was introduced into Japan around the 8th century A.D., and the sixteen-petaled chrysanthemum was adopted for the crest and official seal of the Emperor. The Imperial throne of Japan is referred to as the Chrysanthemum Throne. Regarded as a symbol of the sun, perfection, and long life, the chrysanthemum is celebrated by the Japanese during the annual Festival of Happiness held in November. We have been unable to determine whether or not further volumes of the work were published. Bookseller Inventory # elala1629
