Item Description: The Liberator Publishing Company, New York, 1920. Soft cover. Book Condition: Poor. Lydia Gibson; Boardman Robinson; Clive Weed; Art Young; William Gropper; Maurice Becker (illustrator). First Edition. New York: The Liberator Publishing Company, 1920. First Edition. Cover art, "Russia Victorious", by Lydia Gibson. Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 48 pp. Poor, in that this issue is essentially disbound and the back cover is missing. No major defects other than being disbound and some perimeter chipping to the very fragile paper; last page darkened at left. Some soiling. Please see scans. The January, 1920 issue (Volume 3, No.1, serial number 22) of the famed and seminal creation of Max Eastman and his sister Crystal Eastman, with which they picked up the flag from The Masses, which had been shut down by the U.S. Government on the basis of postal regulations. A socialist publication like The Masses, The Liberator had, in addition to ideological commentary, a variety of art, poetry and short fiction, including many covers and other interior artwork by a number of talented artists - in this issue, no less than Lydia Gibson, Art Young, William Gropper, Boardman Robinson, Clive Weed, and Maurice Becker. Inexpensively produced, but trenchant and destined to become enshrined in American political publishing history. By 1924, The Liberator itself would itself be closing its doors, to be briefly replaced by the Workers Monthly. Contributions in this issue are by some timeless names: Max Eastman; Crystal Eastman; William Ellery Leonard; Mary Heaton Vorse; Hary Kemp; Irwin Granich; Mary White Ovington; Floyd Dell; Frederick Kuh; Winthrop D. Lane; and Robert Minor . An amazing piece of American political publishing history, in separate leaves now and tattered a bit as well. But simply not replaceable as what it is. Please review scans. l-Lng. Bookseller Inventory # 005593

Item Description: The Masses Publishing Company, New York, 1913. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. John Sloan, Arthur Young, K.R. Chamberlain, Richard Battle, Glintonkamp, Maurice Becker, H.S. Turner, Glenn Coleman, Stuart Davis (illustrator). 1st Edition. New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1913. The November, 1913 issue (Volume V, Number 2, whole number 30). Large Folio, illustrated stapled wraps, 22 pp. Very Good by any periodical standard; as the very inexpensively-produced budget-of-the-heart icon The Masses was, this example is certainly better than very good, by its own standard. Moderate slits at spine top and bottom; modest toning to the remarkably healthy contents. See scans. Certainly one of the most seminal socio-political American publications of the last 200 years, The Masses was a collection of ideological art, opinion and reporting - usually contributed with little or no compensation - which strongly represented socialist / marxist values, but in a larger sense was representative of labor, women's rights, and radical left issues in general as those were at that time. Famous names of the era often contributed work, but the names of the regulars are themselves all now in history books. The now-timeless publication was shut down by the U.S. Government in 1918 on the basis of postal regulations, after two intense and ideologically-charged trials. Eastman and his sister, Crystal, then started The Liberator to carry on; after The Liberator closed its doors in 1926, The New Masses, under the primary leadership of Mike Gold, carried the radical flag. The Masses, as the first, is also the rarest. Text contributors to this issue of November, 1913 included Eastman, Mary Heaton Vorse, William English Walling, Howard Brubaker, Horation Winslow, Harry Kemp, W.P. Lawson, Rose Pastor Stokes, James Henle, and Robert C. Brown. Art was contributed by John Sloan, Arthur Young, K.R. Chamberlain, Richard Battle, Glintonkamp, Maurice Becker, H.S. Turner, Glenn Coleman, and Stuart Davis, with Sloan executing the front cover, and Davis the rear cover. Check out all of these names. An extraordinarily rare piece of American publishing and political history. l-lng2. Bookseller Inventory # 001518
