About this Item: Charles Boni Paperbooks, New York, 1929. Softcover (Stiff Boards). Condition: Very Good. Rockwell Kent (illustrator). First Paperback Edition. Boni produced several editions of this book, with Rockwell Kent as the artist. The Charles Boni Paper Books was the first in an experiment to produce a more affordable alternative to the hardbound books. Thus it is once of the earliest of the paperback books available. The book had a larger format (71/2" x 5" wide), and the text block is sewn in, rather than glued. Stiff cardboard type of paper on cover. Design on cover and end papers and on cover page which looks like the work of Rockwell Kent, although I found no attribution. Since he did do the other editions by Boni, I am pretty confident it is him. Same design on both front and back covers. Book shows wear and is missing small piece of spine bottom edge, otherwise in very good condition. 142 pages. Illustrator: Rockwell Kent. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Category: Vintage Paperbacks; Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: VIN000085. Seller Inventory # VIN000085

About this Item: Charles Boni Papert Books, New York, 1929. Illustrated Wrappers. Condition: Near Fine. Rockwell Kent (illustrator). First Paperback Edition. 142pp. FIRST TRADE PAPERBACK IN THE USA. An important prototype edition in the history of book publishing. According to the publisher's statement, "The Paper Books was founded in nineteen twenty-nine by Charles Boni to place good books, well designed and carefully made, within reach of any reader." The Bridge of San Luis Rey was set up and printed in May, 1929, as an example of the format. Boni offered, for a subscription of $5 per year, a new Paper Book on the twenty-fifth of each month. Sixteen issues came out, and then the series ended after the economic crisis of 1929. This precedes the first Penguin paperback and the first Pocketbook. A near fine copy in orange wraps illustrated by Rockwell Kent, showing the wind blowing Paper Books through the sky. Very light rubbing to extremities, light fading of spine and some faint smudges to covers. Internally pristine. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 007618
