Item Description: Portfolio Books, Rehoboth Beach, DE, 1999. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Fleming, Kevin (illustrator). SIGNED on Title Page by Kevin Fleming! "My earliest memories of Kent County are of playing with friends on the quiet streets of tiny Clayton, a town that could double for television's fictional Mayberry. Later, when my family moved to the country, we were surrounded by Amish farms. My best memories are of riding horseback across endless farm fields, spending hot summer afternoons swimming in spring-fed ponds and camping in the ancient woods that surrounded our home. Kent County was certainly an idyllic place to grow up 40-some years ago and in many ways has remained untouched by time. Despite the inevitable growth, Kent County has been able to maintain the special charm I remember from my youth. Clayton's centerpiece is still a tractor and farm equipment dealer. Outside of town, corn fields stretch to the horizon and the sound of hoofbeats from Amish horses can still be heard in the distance. Dover celebrates its colonial and Victorian roots with Old Dover Days, while overhead giant Air Force C-5B aircraft carry military equipment and personnel anywhere in the world. Bombay Hook National Wildlife REfuge, one of my favorite childhood places to visit is the winter home of tens of thousands of Canada geese, snow geese and other migratory birds. Just down the road in Leipsic, Sambo's Tavern still serves some of the best steaming hot crabs you'll find anywhere in the world. It seems the only things that ever changed at Sambo's are the daily newspapers covering the tables. New Businesses and industry have brought more people and better jobs to Kent County. Route 1, a new limited-access superhighway, whisks summer tourists to the beaches in Sussex County and better connects Kent to major northern cities. Cultural improvements like the opening of the Sewell Biggs Museum and the renovation of the Capital Theater into a performing arts center bring big-city pleasures to quiet Kent County. Now as we begin a new millennium, I'm happy to have revisited my boyhood home to see the changes and larn that much has stayed the same. With the help of my friend and talented writer, Nancy E. Lynjch, I invite you to see the places and meet the people that make Kent County such a special place." A beautiful full-color photographic (and written) essay by Fleming describing Kent County! 160 pages. Book is in NEAR FINE condition. Minor wear to dust jacket; thus, VERY GOOD condition. Inscribed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 007314

Item Description: Portfolio Books, Rehoboth Beach, DE, 1999. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Fleming, Kevin (illustrator). SIGNED BY Kevin Fleming and Nancy E. Lynch on title page! "Welcome to the beauty that is New Castle County! With woven threads of history, culture and spirituality, New Castle County forms a tapestry of homegrown charm. One can travel the cobblestone streets of Olde New Castle, sample the catch from the watermen of Port Penn, taste the bounty of rich farmland around Middletown and marvel at the wonders of world class museums outside Wilmington. New Castle County, Delaware is the county that started the state that started the nation! New Castle County was born in September of 1673 when the Dutch appointed a magistrate to govern what was then a wild, untamed land. The Dutch, Swedes and English battled fiercely to claim its riches. Generations of men and women from across the globe have since shaped its landscape, both physically and culturally. The most indelible influence came when a Frenchman, Eleuthere Irenee duPont, first harnessed the power of the Brandywine River to make black powder and an empire was born. It was a family and a company that reinvested in the community. Today, from roads to schools to mansions now turned museums, the duPont legacy is tangible aty almost every turn. Working for 'duPonts' as its colloquially referred to, has been the livelihood of countless fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, spanning ten generations. Delaware is truly a microcosm of the eastern seaboard of the United States. The smallest yet most populous of the three counties, New Castle County serves ads the industrialized North with Kent and Sussex the more pastoral South. But from boardroom to backyard, assembly line to farm field there is a sense of community pervasive in all things. It's the kind of place where you're asked which high school you went to as frequently as where you're from. I hope you enjoy this pictorial essay of the place where I have grown up, r4aised my family and enjoyed a quality of life unique to the people, places and things that are New Castle Count." Beautifully illustrated with full-color photographs. 160 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket has minor wear; VERY GOOD condition. Signed by both Author and Illu.
