Item Description: [n.p.], Augsburg, 1758. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 4to (190 x160mm). Double-page copperplate engraved title of acanthus leaf frame. 34 (of 42) double-page openings of copperplate engraved maps of European lands and table for geographical distances followed by a set of 23 (of 26) battle maps. Finely colored in washes of yellow, red and green washes, in a contemporary hand. Extensively inscribed and captioned throughout in a youthful contemporary hand, in German, also probably early owner "Carl Christian Anno 1775" and "Geografie Carta" at opening with other pen scrawlings and remnants of red wax seal. Original pasteboard binding; (some thumbsoiling and wear with use, title with some loss, some maps with early paper repairs, lacking at least 8 maps: 2, 5, (parts of map 12 Neuf Chatel excised), 13, 19, 28, 36, 37, 41, and 3 battle plans, map for Prague and Hof Ellenback battle plan loose but present.) Hand-colored first edition of the ‘Kriegs Atlas’. Georg Christoph Kilian was a member of the renowned Kilian dynasty of artists and engravers of Augsburg. He characterized by his prevailing humanist ideals, working both as a talented artist and as an historian, art collector and biographer of other artists. Apart from his renowned natural history collection, Kilian had a well-conceived art library and above all a comprehensive graphics collection, comprising engravings, woodcarvings and drawings. This is the first and only edition of his popular cartographic work the Kriegs Atlas one of his major contributions to cartography made during the Seven Years War, the first global conflict. His other notable works included the Supplement to the Atlas Curieux (1738); Kleiner Atlas (1757), Theat. Guerre Allemagne (1760), and America Septentrionalis (1760). The Kriegs Atlas is rare survival given its usefulness, only located at two institutional collections at University of Minnesota and Berkeley. Bookseller Inventory # LD8050
