Kipling's famous tales about adolescent boys at a British boarding school. Item Description: MacMillan and Co, London, 1898. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. Publisher's blue cloth, with decorative floral-design gilt. Lightly handled only, minor toning to spine. Near fine. A collection of [mainly] pseudo-scientific romances in which duty and work are exhalted, with tales concerning ocean-going freighters, railroad locomotives, bridge-building and the fourth dimension. The most famous story however is pure fantasy; the gifted Kipling in a masterful display of short prose takes the reader, via Georgie Cottar (the 'Brushwood Boy' of the title), through the dreams of his imagination to a well-fomed other world called 'The Lost Continent', complete with a crossover or entrance point (where true sleep begins), vast mines hollowed from the heart of the land, dim valleys, dark woods and mountain passes, a lamp-post at the top of the down, a friend at the meeting place, a clockwork steamboat, The City of Sleep, the 'Thiry-Mile Ride', burning towns, the House of the Sick Thing, and a foreboding day-bringer who takes you to waking. all of which was penned a whole generation before either Narnia or The Shire was imagined. Stewart 180. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [p170]. Kipling; Something of Myself (p215), Wilson; The Strange Ride of Rudyard Kipling, Amis; Kipling and his World. Item Description: MacMillan and Co, London, 1893. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. Publisher's blue cloth, with decorative floral-design gilt. Lightlu used, small dampmark to lower board. Very good indeed. A superb collection of short stories including the paranormal tales 'Children of The Zodiac', 'The Finest Story in the World' and the classic, macabre 'Lost Legion'; Kipling is now rather overlooked in the supernatural genre, but he was nevertheless a prolific and gifted writer of strange tales producing forty-three ghost stories spanning his entire career. Also contains Kipling's first naval story 'Judson and the Empire', and the seafaring fantasy 'A Matter of Fact' in which three journalists aboard a tramp steamer encounter a dying sea-monster and its mate. The most notable story is 'In The Rukh [jungle]', being the first appearance of the author's most famous character Mowgli, here as a grown man in loin-cloth, with an extraordinary understanding and control of the jungle creatures who has little time for tigers. Mowgli would feature heavily in Kipling's next two works, The Jungle Book (1894), and The Second Jungle Book (1895). Stewart 118. Bleiler; The Guide to Supernatural Fiction [958], also Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [p170]. Item Description: London: Macmillan 1932, 1932. FIRST EDITION. Octavo., pp. 400. Publisher's red cloth in original dust wrapper. Book is near fine, jacket is very good with some chipping to spine ends (sunned to cloth beneath same), slight lean. Shows extremely well. Short stories including the supernatural tales 'Unprofessional', with its astrological theme, and 'Uncovenanted Mercies', which concerns guardian spirits and the afterlife. Also contains the very Indian story 'The debt' which sees Kipling turn full circle; this is a tale of devotion to a King Emperor seen through the eys of a young Sahib, six year old William, son of the Doctor of the Gaol, who was told stories (like the young Kipling) by his 'ayah' and Indian servants, one of whom is a convict. The most famous piece in this collection is 'Dayspring Mishandled', acknowledged to be one of Kipling's finest tales. Stewart 588. Bleiler; The Guide to Supernatural Fiction [960], also Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [p170]. Kipling; Something of Myself (p215), Wilson; The Strange Ride of Rudyard Kipling, Amis; Kipling and his World. Bookseller Inventory # 30213

Item Description: Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler and Co., London: Sampson Low Marston and Company [1890]., 1890. Short stories. A 'Wheeler' pamphlet published in India at 1 Rupee or in the UK at 1 shilling. Third edition overall; this copy nicely preserved in the original illustrated pale green wraps. Some expected dustiness and handling, spine rolled with a few creases and tears, browned to extremities. A most presentable and usable example of a fragile 'shilling' paperback. 'The Phantom Rickshaw' story is a classic of 'the psychpathic state' and this tale, along with 'The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes' (originally titled 'The Village of the Dead'), have been likened in manner to the weird tales of Edgar Allan Poe, succesfully re-created in a Simla, rather than Gothic setting. [Stewart] See also Wilson; The Strange Ride of Rudyard Kipling, Amis; Kipling and his World. Bookseller Inventory # 42975
