ABOUT THIS BOOK: Early Wednesday evening, August 11, 1965, Marquette and Ronald Frye, Two Negro men in their early twenties, were stopped for reckless driving. At first, it seemed that Marquette would submit to arrest quietly, but a crowd developed. More police arrived. Marquette was handcuffed and thrust into the squad car. Ronald took his side: his mother argued violently with the police and was arrested-some said with too much force. The crowd became furious and stoned the police as they left. The mob then began stoning cars, buses, overturning cars and beating passengers. Thus began what was later termed the Watts outbreak and now know as the most violent and most costly race riot in American history. During the riot, 35 people were killed, 1,032 injured. More than 600 buildings were damaged by fire. This and so much more is told about this incredible drama that played out in the slums of Los Angeles in 1965.(Publisher).
