Item Description: Ansingburgh NY: Penniman & Bliss, 1805. Hardcover. 1st American Edition. Period Full Leather, 8vo, 368 pages. This is the stated First American Edition of Baron Knigge's sociological/philosophical work on human relations. Adolf Franz Friedrich Knigge (1752-1796) , was a German philosopher and writer, under the name "Philo, " was one of the most active members of the Illuminati, a mutual moral and intellectual improvement society founded by Adam Weishaupt, and which later became affiliated with the Freemasons. This work is an English language translation of Knigge's most poular work, Ueber den Umgang mit Menschen (1788) , in which he lays down rules to be observed for a peaceful, happy and useful life. (Shaw & Shoemaker, American Imprints: 8743) . Knigge's book was often viewed as a manual of etiquette so that the term "Knigge" in German came to mean something like "good manners. " The book , however, is more on the ways that humans should interact to live a morally good life. Interesting social guidelines such as: xiv "provoke not the resentment of an ill tempered woman; " xv "Is it possible to avoid falling in love? ; " xvi Seducing or deluding.; " xvii "On conversation with coquettes and seducing females. " This English translation may be more of a free interpretation by Peter Will since it says "after the German" rather than "translated from the German. " This volume was published in Lansingburgh New York which is now a part of Troy. Original morocco spine label and gilt embellishments. Period leather boards show wear. Especially at the foot and spine of the crown, but otherwise a very nice clean copy, with only occational foxing, the nicest we have ever seen. Very Good- Condition. (SPEC-35-6).
