Crown folio: 16 5/8 inches by 10 1/2 inches. Plate number M1 from the second edition of Thesaurus Rei Herbariae Hortensisque Universalis published in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1780. Titling beneath the image is in both Latin and German. Trained as an engraver beginning at age 18, Knorr was influenced by the work of Albrecht Dürer and by his own work with Martin Tyroff, which piqued his interest in natural history. His first independent scientific engravings were the 301 plates he engraved for the 2 volumes of Thesaurus Rei Herbariae Hortensisque Universalis, first published in 1750. The engravings illustrated the text by P.F. Gmelin and G.R. Böhmer. Knorr died in 1761, and his heirs reissued the engravings in 1780 and again in 1788. The print portrays the almond plant scientifically and artistically from flower to seed. It is a superb impression with the original beautiful and subtle hand-coloring. The paper is bright and subtle with the tiniest chip at one corner and just a few small spots of foxing--all outside the platemark. Size: Crown Folio. Fine Art Print.

Bound in contemporary crushed morocco (re-backed). On the spine, five raised bands. Title and author ("Coquillages/ de/ Knorr") gilt to the second panel, number gilt to the third. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block gilt. Rubbed generally, with patches of wear at the extremities. Foxing to the first letterpress title, with scattered mild tanning and offsetting. The greatest eighteenth-century work of conchology, Knorr s Delices (a German edition, Vergnügen der Augen und des Gemüths, began publication in 1757) gathers the specimens of the Wunderkammern of Nuremberg, Amsterdam and beyond. The descriptions there was a contemporaneous Latin edition, and a later Dutch edition are unusually descriptive and readable, and not, as so often, truncated and terse. Still, nothing lacks in precision; vol. VI includes a concordance to Rumpf, who came to supplant Linnæus as the authority on mollusks. Knorr died in 1761, and so the introduction to each part but the first is signed by his heirs. Perhaps this is the reason that the title-page is sometimes found bearing the year 1760 and sometimes 1764; his death may well have delayed publication of the first volume. Nissen, ZBI 2236. Dietzsch, J. L. Colve, Chr. Leinberger, C. N. Kleemann, N. F. Eisenbergermann, J. C. Keller and others. The plates shows corals (15), shells (7), butterflies (6), sea-urchins (4), minerals (6), lobsters and spiders (7), starfishes (4), fishes (9), birds (7), mammals (14) and reptiles (12). First edition of this famous publication, containing beautiful illustrations from some of the foremost cabinets of curiosities in eighteenth-century Europe. Many of the examples are from the collection of Christoph Jacob Trew (as is mentioned at the bottom of each plate), a rich Nuremberg physician, who put together an important 'Wunderkammer' of natural history specimens, much admired by foreign visitors. It's called the "aufwendigste zoologische Tafelwerk Nürnbergs und den gleichzeitigen ausländischen durchaus ebenbürtig, auch im Text durchaus zuverlässig." (Nissen 152). He worked together with further outstanding Nuremberg engravers of 18th century, such as: B. R. Dietschlin, G. F. Dietsch, J. L. Colve,Chr. Leinberger, C. N. Kleemann, J. J. Eisenmann and J. C. Keller. The large and gorgeous coloured plates illustrate corals (15),conch (7), butterflies(6), sea urchins(4), minerals (6), lobster and spiders (7), starfishes (4), fishes (9), birds (7), mammals (14) and reptiles(12). Begun by Knorr as early as 1751, it was continued by his heirs after his death in 1761. The book describes items from the great contemporary natural history collections, including the magnificent white falcon (with hood) from the collection of the famous physician and botanist Christoph Jakob Trew. The illustrations, occasionally printed in colours but mostly hand-coloured in radiant hues, depict birds, exotic mammals, fishes, corals, butterflies and other insects. - Occasional insignificant waterstaining to the wide blank margins of the text; a few plates show unobtrusive fingerstaining. A beautiful, very wide-margined copy in excellent state of preservation, printed on good, strong paper. Plates show clean, distinct colours and superior contrast. - Nissen, ZBI 2227. One double-page and 90 full-page exceptionally fine engraved plates, some engraved in colour, all with original hand-colour in full (without the frontispiece found in some copies, some insignificant marginal spotting). Contemporary Dutch mottled calf, each cover decorated with a broad gilt border of acanthus and daisy roll tool (rebacked, spines scuffed, extremities a bit worn, neat repairs to corners). Provenance: with the engraved armorial bookplate and ink library stamp of Hippolyte Wouvermans (fl 1893-1902), bibliophile and member of the Belgian Commissariat, on the front paste-down of each volume, and a bibliographical note by Benjamin Linnig tipped in to the front paste-down of volume one. First edition in Dutch, first published posthumously with German and French text in 1766-1767, limited issue, number 96 of 99 copies printed, this one inscribed as such beneath the list of subscribers by the notary public in Dordrecht, P.J. van Heenbergen, guaranteeing that no copies were printed in excess of those ordered by subscribers. "It is scarcely an exaggeration to say that the beauty of some of Knorr's illustrations exceeds that of their models and that in all cases the artist's eye has transformed neutral, natural objects into permanent, formal aspects of humanism. The detail and accuracy of Knorr's engravings not only made possible zoological classification but firmly established the distinction between fossils of organic origin and sports of nature" (DSB). The magnificent plates include 15 of corals, 7 of shells, 6 of butterflies and moths, 4 of sea-urchins, 6 of minerals, 7 of crabs, lobsters, scorpions and spiders, 4 of starfish, 9 of fish, 7 of birds, 14 mammals and 12 of reptiles. Knorr was an early pioneer of paleontology, and extremely accomplished engraver, and art dealer who, in his lifetime, put together a handsome collection of drawings based on the Cabinets of Curiosity and other amateur collections of natural history specimens in Holland and Germany in the early 18th century (Muller, Houttyn, Schadeloock and others), many of the examples in this book are from the collection of Christoph Jacob Trew (1708-1770), author of "Hortus Nitidissimis". Knorr was a German Paleontologist, engraver, and art dealer who, in his lifetime, put together a handsome collection of drawings based on the Amateur cabinets and collections in Holland and Germany in the early 18th century (Muller, Houttyn, Schadeloock and others). After his death his work was published first in Nuremberg in French and Latin editions in 1764 and 1766, and then in Amsterdam in this Dutch edition of 1770-75.
