Item Description: printed by the Oxford Press, Providence, Rhode Island, 1956. First edition, October 1956. Large octavo, 366pp., 81 b/w plates showing members of the D' Wolf and Gibson families, and the family house, Longfield, in Bristol, Rhode Island, a Gothic revival house designed by Russell Warren in 1848 and the home of, among others, the artist Charles Dana Gibson, whose sister, one of the original "Gibson girls" is the author of the book. This copy is inscribed "For Nancy Hopkins Teir with affectionate reminders of who we are from -- her Aunt "Dodie" / Josephine Gibson Knowlton 1956". The recipient, a niece of Charles Dana Gibson, was a famous aviatrix. This copy is bound in deep blue morocco by Daniel Gibson Knowlton, Josephine's son, at his bookbindery on the family property, and is signed "Knowlton" on the bottom edge of the rear turnover. The binding has some rubbed-in white stains on both covers, and the compartmented spine is browned with age, as are the pictorial endpapers, but is otherwise sound.The front panel bears the arms and name of Charles Dana Gibson in gilt.
