Item Description: Progress Publishers., Moscow, USSR., 1976. Wraps. Konashevich, Vladimir (Artwork by). (illustrator). Stapled binding. 10 p. Color covers and illustrations. Colorfully illustrated paperbound English edition of Russian story. The wraparound cover: fish fishing; frog flying; mice/rats swimming; dog, pig, and cat wearing hats; huge butterfly. This is a story about animals in identity crisis who question their same-o, same-o, voices, so experiment with switching sounds (e.g. chickens now quacking). Only an erudite bunny insisted this was not right, but the animal world chose not to listen. "Naughty tricks" continued and "foxes took matchboxes" and set fire to the sea. Nothing worked to put it out until, inexplicably, a very large and colorful butterfly slowly flapped its wings and the sea/fire was quenched. The relieved and joyful animals had learned their lesson: in the USSR in the 1970s, change was not a good plan, let the world be. Once they got it right again and began line dancing, their appropriate chorus lullibied a child to sleep. Translation note: ".Stamped their feet and wagged their tales (sic: tails? ) / Over all the woods and dales." Very good. No dust jacket. Light soiling & rubbing to stapled binding edge; bottom right corner bent about a half inch. Vibrant interior. Unpaginated 11" X 8.5". Bookseller Inventory # Alibris.0000087

Item Description: Stranstvui¿u¿shchii Entuziast, St. Petersburg, 1921. Soft cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Vladimir Konashevich (illustrator). 1st Edition. 105pp (11). 10.5 x 14.5cm. Original illustrated card wraps, uncut continental wraps. Light toning to paper stock. Booklet separated to wraps. Light even soiling to wraps, shallow creasing, small closed tears, some rubbing. Dated to covers as 1920. From the one of the more prominent figures of the Russian Symbolist movement and illustrated by a notable Soviet illustrator. This lovely volume was produced near the end of the poet¿s career while he was in the grip of a Soviet bureaucratic nightmare and his wife¿s madness. An immeasurable influence on later poets (Ehrenburg waxed lyrically about how the experience of reading Sologub was akin to smoking opium and referring to Sologub as ¿the Great Buddha¿.) his anti-Soviet views meant he was only sparingly published in the Soviet Union after his death although he appeared in several émigré publications and foreign translations. This little book is absolutely gorgeous, the elaborate line drawings by Konashevich are perfect accompaniment to Sologub¿s deep ponderings. Every attempt is made to describe books accurately and fairly. If you have any further questions on this book or any other we may have in stock do get in touch. Bookseller Inventory # 000041
