About this Item: Ecco, 1999. Softcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. "I am inclined to call this the last chapter, but how can an autobiography have a final chapter? At best, it can only be a penultimate one; nor can it be given a rounded-off conclusion, as is possible in a work of fiction." So begins the last chapter of My Days, the only memoir from R. K. Narayan, hailed as "India's most notable novelist and short-story writer" by the New York Times Book Review. In his usual winning, humorous style, R. K. Narayan shares his life story, beginning in his grandmother's garden in Madras with his ferocious pet peacock. As a young boy with no interest in school, he trains grasshoppers, scouts, and generally takes part in life's excitements. Against the advice of all, especially his commanding headmaster father, the dreaming Narayan takes to writing fiction, and one of his pieces is accepted by Punch magazine (his "first prestige publication"). Soon his life includes bumbling British diplomats, curious movie moguls, evasive Indian officials, eccentric journalists, and "the blind urge" to fall in love. R. K. Narayan's larger-than-life perception of the human comedy is at once acute and forgiving, and always true to it. Solid binding. Book. Seller Inventory # 123498969

About this Item: Penguin Books; Penguin Classics, New York, 2009. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1st. xxi, 341 pages; 20 cm. Tight, clean copy. Age toning. First edition thus. "Two comic gems from the father of modern Indian fiction- available in one volume for the first time. These two novels show R. K. Narayan at his best, offering enchanting tales of human absurdity that are also skillfully woven parables infused with Hindu mysticism. A Tiger for Malgudi is told from the point of view of the tiger Raja, now old and toothless, who looks back on his life in the circus and in films, and on his dramatic bid to escape the brutish human world in a quest for freedom. The Man-Eater of Malgudi is the story of Nataraj, a mild-mannered printer who stands up to Vasu, a pugnacious taxidermist, when Vasu begins to covet the beloved temple elephant for his collection. / R. K. Narayan (1906-2001), born and educated in India, was the author of fourteen novels, numerous short stories and essays, a memoir, and three retold myths. Pico Iyer is an acclaimed travel writer, essayist, and novelist, and a distant relative of Narayan's." - Publisher. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 082582

About this Item: Orient BlackSwan, New Delhi, India, 2010. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. K. S. Krishnaswamy was a leading light in the Reserve Bank of India and the Planning Commission between the early 1950s and the late 1970s. He retired as a deputy governor of the Reserve Bank. Armed with a doctorate from the London School of Economics he began his career at a time when the road was rocky for newly independent India. The author vividly captures the optimism, commitment and desire to do well among policy makers in those days. His ringside view of the pulls and pressures within the administration and outside it, the hopes that sustained a majority in the bureaucracy and the lasting ties he formed with many he came in contact with are compelling on their own. Even more relevant is what he has to say about the political agendas eroding the Reserve Bank’s autonomy and degrading democratic institutions since the late 1960s. Windows of Opportunity however is not a political polemic; it is a ruminative memoir by one who saw much happen, and not happen, at a time when everything seemed possible and promising in India. About this Item: Cambridge University Press/ Foundation Books, 2006. Paperback. Condition: New. First edition. With globalization, English has become an economic necessity and Indians have realized that they have the ‘English advantage’ over many other countries like China and Japan. India has shed its colonial complexes towards English and has come to terms with the language; Indians have separated the English language from the English. The Story of English in India presents historical facts in a socio-cultural framework. The book is a must for all teachers and students of English; it will be useful for all those interested in the politics of language and education in India. Key issues discussed: - Are we indebted to the British for introducing English in India? - What was the role of English during India`s struggle for freedom? - Has English united India? - Has English divided India into two - the English knowing classes who govern and the non-English knowing masses who are governed? - Will English ever become an Indian tongue spoken in the great Indian language bazaar? - What will be the future of major Indian languages in the wake of the English onslaught? About this Item: Orient BlackSwan, New Delhi, India, 2015. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. In the 1980s, a field action project, which later developed into a socio-legal service to address Violence against Women (VAW), was initiated and developed by an academic institute of social work in strategic partnership with the police in Mumbai and Maharashtra. This service, termed the ‘Special Cells’, worked in tandem with the police force, and in the past three decades, has been replicated in eight states across India. Women Survivors of Violence is a first-person account of the evolution of the Special Cells. In the mid-1980s, the author was the first social worker of the TISS-initiated ‘field action project’—working on the issue of violence against women from within the police system. The result was the introduction of Special Cells in the police system. This narrative traces the 29-year-old journey of this institution, and provides a deeply personal account of the effectiveness of a multi-agency coordinated response to VAW, in the form of a partnership between an academic institute, the police system, and the violated woman. This books adds to the limited literature available in India on the processes and lessons learnt from developing and implementing an intervention on VAW. It details the processes of understanding the violated woman and the police; setting up of systems to work with women from within the police system; and engaging with the state as the instrument that can secure the right of women to a safe and secure life. It critically reflects on the learnings of the Special Cells from the women, police, the state, law, and social work practices, in the context of the ongoing struggles to respond to violence against women. An informative and deeply important account, this book will be of interest to students and educators in departments of Social Work and Women’s Studies, government personnel, trainers in police academies, and administrators. Those interested in women’s issues will also find it fascinating.Printed Pages: 232. Size: 15 x 23 Cm. Seller Inventory # 102272

Chemistry of Natural Products, A Unified Approach, provides a planned account of the common features structural and stereochemical of naturally occurring organic compounds).
