About this Item: This Tennesseean was a prolific novelist and short story whose work often depicted rural life in the deep South and inspired the likes of such regional writers as Jesse Stuart; among his better known works are "The Cabin in the Cotton" (1931), "I Was a Share-Cropper" (1937), "Their Ancient Grudge" (1946) and "Riders in the Night" (1965). ANS on a heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" preprinted "penny postcard," Martin, TN, cancelled on 2 April 1941. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. Thanks this admirer for birthday greetings ("That rarely happens -- out of a stranger-land a friendly note") and remarks that "Now 'The Usurper' is just off the press & all the reviews are so far kind. You might like it. Most are saying it is the best." Handsomely penned in blue ink and signed boldly in full. Seller Inventory # 42559
