About this Item: SUARAM, 2011. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 159 pp., bibliography. Patriots & Pretenders is the peoples’ history of the Malayan Independence struggle, which challenges the ‘official’ version of how ‘Merdeka’ was won. Following on from his 2007 best-selling May 13: Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969, Dr Kua Kia Soong here attempts to put the record straight on another important episode in Malaysian history. As in May 13, he has scoured documents from the British Archives which reveal the thinking behind British colonial strategy during the Emergency, especially for post-colonial Malaya. These documents also reveal the efforts of the British High Commissioner at the time, in the formation of the Alliance. This alternative history poses these questions for Malaysians today: - Who were the patriots who fought to liberate the country from the British colonial power and the Japanese fascists during WWII, and who were the pretenders? - Which parties at that time stood for genuine multi-ethnicity? - How would the nation have developed if the "People’s Constitution" of the AMCJA-PUTERA coalition had been adopted at Independence? - How have current policies deviated from the so-called " Social Contract" at Independence? - How have communalist politics been perpetuated in Malaysia since Independence? While this country remains stuck in a racialist rut after 54 years on Independence, Patriots & Pretenders calls on Malaysian to break through to a people-centred non-racial agenda for change. From the lessons of the past, Kua outlines some pointers to the future which could form the Malaysian peoples' demands fro the next general elections. Seller Inventory # 9834407947GERAK051016

About this Item: Suaram Kommunikasi, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, 2011. Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. New. This indefatigable author now turns his attention to the history of the country's freedom struggle against the British and Japanese. In doing so he seeks to write a history from the perspective of the common man and woman, in contrast with the more traditional history which concentrates on the western educated Malaysian elites groomed to take over without rocking the boat too much. Much of the author's work is based on British historical archives of the time. 159 pages including a bibliography. Weight 0.40 Kg Postage within Malaysia is free. Seller Inventory # ML1432

About this Item: SUARAM, 2016. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 151 pp. The rise of the far right and the religious bigots in Malaysia has in turn given rise to a 'Movement of Moderates'. In the body politic, espousing 'moderation' becomes imprecise since it is an example of the kind of language that is also used by the powers-that-be to deal with those who uphold truth, justice and human rights. Malaysian society is fast becoming an Orwellian dystopia in which labels such as 'moderates', 'extremists', 'national security', 'national harmony' and other fluffy terms have become relative and imprecise, depending on how they are defined by the state and the judiciary. In this collection of provocative essays, Dr Kua Kia Soong analyses the glaring issues as they have arisen in the current Malaysian political sphere. In his characteristic straight-talking and non-partisan approach, he takes to task the ruling Barisan Nasional and the alternative Pakatan Rakyat coalitions on these national and international issues. He calls for far-reaching reforms that recognise all citizens as equal and promote healthy ethnic relations, while dealing effectively with racism, racial discrimination and related intolerance in our society. About this Item: Strategic Information Research Development (SIRD), 2005. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 195 p. Includes: illustrations, bibliography. Civil rights are rights belonging to every citizen of the country. These have to do with the rights of citizens to liberty and equality. This is the first book on the Malaysian civil rights movement that spontaneously grew during the Eighties. It remains an inspiration today for ethnic minorities and other oppressed sections of the population. The author was involved in this movement from the start and chronicles its progress while assessing its relevance to present day Malaysian realities. This study is essential reading for those who want to understand the issues as well as the non-governmental organizations involved, especially the Chinese associations of Malaysia. 0.0. About this Item: Suaram Komunikasi, 2010. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 179 pp., bibliography. This latest book by Dr Kua Kia Soong is a bombshell! It is about bombs an shells, jet fighters, helicopters, submarines and other weapons of war, all bought with Malaysian tax payers' money, and it is a lot of money! The 10th Malaysian Plan has allocated RM23 billion for defence & security. This is the first full expose of Malaysia's military since Independence. It contains the A to Z of Malaysia's arms industry and spending, from the unanswered questions surrounding the murder of Altantuya; to the high incidence of accidents involving the Sikorsky Nuri helicopters. Kua has been monitoring the arms trade since the Seventies and what is significant about this book is that it brings together in one volume, the key issues and events connected with defence spending in Malaysia. From a range of published sources, he unearths the vested interests, corruption, wastage and negligence in arms procurement and alerts us to the growth of the domestic military-industrial complex. Malaysians are called upon to seriously consider the question of war and peace; the justifications for arms procurements; procedures of accountability and the choice of alternative socially useful production. The 'Arms for Aid Scandal' is published in this groundbreaking book for the first time. It contains the 1994 revelations from the British press on the RM5 billion arms deal as well as the statutory declarations of private investigator Balasubramaniam in the Altantuya murder case. About this Item: LLG Cultural Development Centre, 2010. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 192 pp., illustrations, bibliography. This is the first book in the English-language on a man who has been beatified as the "Soul of the Malaysian Chinese" since his passing in 1985. No other Malaysian Chinese has been accorded that honour. No other Malaysian Chinese has been given the privilege of lying-in-state at the Chinese Assembly Hall in Kuala Lumpur. At his funeral, the procession was the largest the capital had ever witnessed for any Malaysian Chinese. His name is Lim Lian Geok and every year during the anniversary of his passing in December, leaders of political parties, associations and school children go to pay their respects at this great man's mausoleum at the Hokkien Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur. He was spokesperson for the Malayan Chinese community through out the Independence struggle and he took part in the "Malacca Talks" with the Tunku over the Constitutional issues in 1955. He was even asked to write Hari Raya messages in the Jawi scripted Utusan Melayu in the Fifties. And yet this patriot and educator was stripped of his Malayan citizenship and his teaching licence in 1961 despite his contributions toward mother tongue education, civil rights and nation building. Lim Lian Geok was not your stereotype Malaysian Chinese leader in a suit, driving a limousine and yearning for power, wealth or honorific title. Until the end of his life, he lived simply and in humble lodgings. He was first and foremost a teachers' union leader who lived his mission of a civil rights leader of the Malaysian Chinese community. This book is an attempt to inform Malaysians that it is time to right an injustice done to this exemplary patriot and civil rights leader by reclaiming his Malaysian citizenship and teaching license and to say to all the world, 'This was a man!'. About this Item: SUARAM, 2015. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 323 pp., bibliography, index. At last! The elephant in the room is not only acknowledged but caringly examined from trunk to tail by Malaysian social scientist Kua Kia Soong. This is the first in-depth expose of racism & racial discrimination in Malaysia, written from a historical and class perspective. It focuses the nation to confront once and for all the ʻBumiputera agendaʼ which has been implemented with impunity since the New Economic Policy in 1971. These discriminatory policies fail to meet the standards of international conventions and continue to stymie Malaysiaʼs goal of achieving high-income status by 2020. This book is about the politics of race and class in Malaysia, highlighting the structural conditions that enable the crude manipulation of race to serve the economic interests of the ruling elite. The chapters on the Emergency contain declassified documents from the British Public Records Office, which were made available after the 30-year secrecy rule was lifted. The author offers alternatives that are needs based and thus race-free by doing away with such discriminatory policies, rent-seeking activities and patronage politics.
