Item Description: Librairie Universelle, Paris, 1905. Pictorial Wraps. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. Le Cantique des Cantiques qui est sur Salomon - Traduit Litteralement et Remis a la Scene par Jean de Bonnefon - A été joue pour la Première fois à Paris le 22 Mai 1905 - Illustrations de F. Kupka. LIMITED NUMBERED SPECIAL EDITION in ORIGINAL WRAPS. Number 7 of only 7 copies (of a total edition of 517). Hand-numbered "7" in black ink on colophon page, apparently this is one of the 7 exemplaires numerotes de 1 à 7, contentant chacun un dessin original de Kupka, sur papier des Manufactures imperiales du Japon. Though called for, this copy is NOT signed by the editor/translator (as is often the case). Also, there is NO original drawing by Kupka as called for on colophon page as one of the first 7 special copies (though this copy does include all 6 woodcuts, as issued). Unclear whether the original drawing has been removed at some point. OCLC notes that the copy in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris is incomplete. Exemplaire sur Hollande No. 7". Contains 6 original b&w woodcuts (at pages 39, 41, 49, 57, 65, 69), two-colour illustrated title page (which is reproduced as the front cover), decorative single-colour borders throughout, vignettes, plus initial letters by Frantisek Kupka in wonderful Art Nouveau style. Text in French. Illustrator Frantisek Kupka (1871-1957), also known as Frank or François Kupka, was "a Czech painter & graphic artist. He was a pioneer & co-founder of the early phases of the abstract art movement & Orphic cubism (Orphism). Kupka's abstract works arose from a base of realism, but later evolved into pure abstract art. Kupka worked as an illustrator of books & posters &, during his early years in Paris, became known for his satirical drawings for newspapers & magazines". French editor Jean de Bonnefon (1866-1928) was "a Bachelor of Arts & a member of the Society of Men of Letters. He is the author of numerous articles which were critical of religious policy & the clergy. Jean de Bonnefon played a decisive role in the drafting of the Law of Separation of Church & State. He lived for some time in Vienna, in the privacy of the Hofburg, of which he knew the most dramatic secrets, & at the Vatican, of which he knew the intrigues". Published 15 November 1905. Large folio volume. Sewn in publisher's original pictorial wraps, with foldover French flaps. NOTE: A GOOD copy only. Binding split & spine damaged (as is often the case, being a large volume in a fragile binding) with small loss to spine (4cm), book block shaken, mild offsetting thoughout, otherwise a nice clean softcover copy. Internally VERY GOOD. The book is now protected & held together with a worn removable clear cover. Full pagination as follows: ffep, [blank], half-title page, limitation colophon, title page, copyright page, 7-84pp, rear endpaper. Very large heavy book, extra shipping may be required. Scarce title, with OCLC showing only 18 copies held in libraries worldwide. RARE. Size: 44.5 x 32cm. Bookseller Inventory # 003009
