ENCOUNTER MAGAZINE was a leading and influential literary & cultural journal "Encounter", founded in 1953 by poet Stephen Spender and author Irving Kristol, was an English literary and cultural monthly magazine that covered the arts, literature, history and politics. Its contributors consisted of some of the leading intellectual and literary lights of the day. Melvin Lasky replaced Kristol as editor in 1958. Spender resigned as editor in 1967, and the journal ceased publication in 1990. This issue is notable for the inclusion of the First Appearance of a piece on Trieste by famed Science Fiction author Brian W. Aldiss. Also the First Appearances of three stories by Kurt Kusenberg. The article, "Has Futurology a Future?" by Robert Nisbet has considerable underlining. The piece by Nisbet is Illustrated by Czech artist Jaroslav Bradác. Oktober 1983 in Hamburg) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller und Kunstkritiker. Leben: Kusenberg wurde als Sohn des deutschen Ingenieurs Carl Kusenberg und dessen Frau Emmy im Jahre 1904 in Göteborg geboren. Er verbrachte seine Kindheit in Lissabon und besuchte ab 1911 die dortige deutsche Bürgerschule. Bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges kehrte die Familie nach Deutschland zurück und ließ sich in Wiesbaden nieder, wo Kurt das Städtische Realgymnasium besuchte. Ab 1922 studierte er zunächst in München Kunstgeschichte. 1925 wechselte er nach Berlin und im Wintersemester 1926 nach Freiburg im Breisgau. Dort promovierte er im Dezember 1928 mit einer Arbeit zu Rosso Fiorentino. Bereits während seines Studiums reiste er durch Italien, Spanien und Frankreich. 1929 arbeitete er vorübergehend im Berliner Kunsthandel. Darüber bemerkte er später ironisch, dass er wohl im Kunsthandel nicht zu gebrauchen sei". 1930 schrieb er als Kritiker für die Weltkunst und die Vossische Zeitung. Danach war er Chefredakteur der Zeitschrift Die Koralle. Ab 1947 lebte Kusenberg als freier Schriftsteller und Lektor in München und Hamburg. Ab 1958 gab er die Reihe rowohlts monographien, später rororo bildmonographien, bei Rowohlt heraus. Bis heute bemerkenswert sind seine Kurzgeschichten. Mit eher nüchterner Sprache führen sie häufig in groteske, versponnene Welten, in denen sich Phantastik und Realität vermischen.
