Item Description: Chicago, IL: Kurz & Allison, 1898., 1898. Original chromolithograph in handsome period oak frame. Approximate image dimensions, H 18 inches x L 24 3/4 inches, plus margins. Approximate full frame dimensions: H 25 3/8 inches x L 31 1/4 inches. Bottom margin features large title BATTLE OF LA QUASINA. NEAR SANTIAGO DE CUBA with smaller caption text: "June 24th 1898. Gen. Young, Comr. Col. Wood's Rough Riders, 1st and 10th Reg. Cavalry (about 1000) routed 2000 Spaniards (who were in ambush) with heavy loss. Am: 18 killed, 50 wounded, 9 missing. Copyrighted 1898 by Kurz & Allison 267-269 Wabash Ave., Chicago." Age toning and foxing prevalent at margins; battle scene colors remain quite bright. Print has not been removed from frame for examination. Sold as is. Backing board is undoubtedly not acid free and most likely not UV glass; recommended that both be replaced by purchaser. Preferred in-store pickup. If shipping required then extra handling and insurance above AbeBook's preset amounts required. Please email or call for jpeg images and additional details. Although titled as "BATTLE OF LA QUASINA" the print actually attempts to depict the skirmish at Las Guasimas (or Las Quasimas) where the Spanish, defending a gap among the hills near Santiago, Cuba, were forced to withdraw by American forces led by General Wheeler. Also involved in the battle were the First and Tenth United States Volunteer Cavalry or Rough Riders under the command of General Young and Colonel Leonard Wood. Unmentioned in the print's caption nor unfortunately shown in the image was the individual who was third in command - Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt - whose charismatic leadership was pivotal during the battle when it was thought that Col. Wood had been killed. Like most Kurz & Allison chromolithographs of the Civil War and Spanish-American War, the depicted battle scene is not historically accurate but the firm's military prints remain highly collectible as they offer stirring imagery playing upon patriotic appeal. This print is referenced on page 61 of A SPLENDID LITTLE WAR: THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR, 1898, THE ARTISTS' PERSPECTIVE (London-Mechanicsburg, PA: Greenhill Books-Stackpole Books, 1998) by Peter Harrington and Frederic A. Sharf. Bookseller Inventory # JUN17-03974
