About this Item: Donnelley, Gassette, Loyd, Chicago, 1883. Ornate Brown Cloth w Gilt. Condition: Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ. First Edition Indicated. Brick-colored cloth, gilt and black lettering and illustrations on front cover and spine, 738 pp. Illustrated throughout text with full page plates.Originally published in 1879 (here-1883), minor wear else VG, lovely gilt and brown cover, One of the least available titles. Strange background to this book: Around the turn of last century, a relatively well-known mystery writer named Lawrence L. Lynch had nine books published. Some of them were reprinted later as by Emma Murdoch Van Deventer, and as John Herrington, book detective, says, At some time someone was able to match Lynch to Van Deventer [as to being the real name of the author], the connection being lost in the mists of time. The onliy problem is, no one has been able to find a real person having Van Deventer's name, including John, and he's been looking. A real teaser of a tale. Enough said of offerings which speak loudly for themselves. Acquire, enjoy, and share what the self-actualized author has discovered in his extensive intellectual travels to prepare this very informative writing for public edification. Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item of 738 pages. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a permanent character lacking in transitory electronic renderings. As always, more photos and/or info will be sent on request. Indeed, these hallowed pages are stoic, self-reliant, certain, sure and competent in their worthiness. By the way, we offer a complimentary service offered by no other rare book vendor. Simply give us a phone call or send us an email or a text message after you receive your book and begin to read it. Ask our Bookly Bar any literary question regarding the material, and we will answer to the best of our well-seasoned ability, for free. Accurate Descriptions/Quality Books/Unmatched Prices Provenance: the elite private collection of the late television actress Lynn Hirschfeld Deerfield, beloved sister of Michael Hirschfeld, CEO of Hirschfeld Galleries. About this Item: Alex T. Loyd & Co., Chicago, 1885. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Owen Wood (illustrator). 1st Edition. From the collection of brothers Adrian Homer & M.B. Goldstone--Steinbeck's bibliographers and prolific collectors of Early Detective and Western fiction--A near fine copy in Green cloth with gilt decoration & lettering to the spine and front cover. This was one of the earliest books on detective fiction--published under the grouping of "Lynch's Detective Novels". Lynch was a member of the Secret Service--and their mission and responsibilities were much different in 1885. A tight and clean copy with only some small black ink spots to the bottom page edge and rear board--great shape for 130+ year old book. Dozens of illustrations--although the illustrator is not credited . E. A. Poe deserves credit for earliest true detective fiction--however books like this kept the interest going. A great collectible copy. 462 pp. with an additional 15 pages of advertisements and notices dealing with featured books and authors of the day. Seller Inventory # cfe16538
